The first saily boat of the year passing westwards along the north coast of Ardnamurchan well inshore of the Fascadale buoy. Tobermory bound? Don’t usually see yachts until April/May so respect for being out and about. Not much wind up here today.............yet

I was amazed to hear that Ardnamurchan lighthouse has been sold and will be moved, stone by stone, to Las Vegas.
IMHO such a fabulous icon should not have been sold. It will make rounding Ardnamurchan just another headland.

"It has been confirmed today the the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse has been bought by the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

The Ardnamurchan peninsula is the westerly most point on the mainland of British Isles. The 36 meter tower, which sits 55 meters above the rocks was built in 1849 from Island of Mull granite. It was designed by Alan Stevenson, whose family were responsible for many of Scotland’s Lighthouses built over a 150 year period.

The Lighthouse is the only one in the world designed with “Egyptian” styling, hence why the building has attracted the attention of the Luxor Hotel. The Lighthouse will be taken down brick by brick and shipped for reassembly at the hotel next to Las Vegas Boulevard."

The Scottish government that hard up.

I suppose as an old tower it requires maintaining. The point also requires a light. Last time I was there it was still operational though modernized. Nice tea room and quite a few tourists. It will be sad to see it go.
Are there plans to replace the tower and the light.
I have been up to the Old Eddystone above Plymouth. I think it was replaced because the rock was crumbling. so it had to be replaced.

I visited Arnamurachan light when I was a kid and it was still manned. It was interesting. I went up the light with the keeper. It was a paraffin light and there was a clockwork mechanism which required winding every hour to rais a weight to the top of the tower. I felt quite privileged to wind the weight up. The keeper had evidently read Tom Sawyer.
A friend has a nice picture of a Vulcan taken looking down from the Top of the Light. I should ask him for a copy of it.

What they going to sell next. Big Ben? I’m sure it would look nice on the Vegas strip.

I can happily report that my first sail of the year was a tad further south and undoubtedly warmer!

Took some friends out on their rather nice Beneteau 331 for a few hours in the Straits south of Lanzarote this morning. Brisk easterlies, high thin cloud and 19c on land. :encouragement:

Those days of UK winter sailing are now, for me, long gone! :)

I visited my boat ashore yesterday (Solent). Plenty of reasons why I couldn't launch, not least the fact that it was going dark an hour after I got there.

But it wasn't cold and it wasn't too windy. I was thinking, if she was rigged and ready and I wasn't too fat for my wetsuit, I'd be ready to start the season early. :)

Odd that the lighthouse website does not mention it. I have friends back home in Fort William, I'll see what they say.

How could the Scottish Government allow such a tourist attraction to be sold?
I think it is/was owned by The Northern Lighthouse Board. A sub section of Trinity House.
I do wonder if it is some kind of spoof.

I think it might be just that. Terry Bendict, cited as manager of the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas on the RSMYC page, was also the owner of the Bellagio Hotel in Oceans Eleven. The previous page relating to Lobster Pots refers to news from March 2018 and the following pages appear to date from April and May 2018. One might surmise that the reference to the sale of the lighthouse dates from 1st April 2018.

BTW, some on here and the Northern Lighthouse Board itself might not appreciate it being described, other than on 1st April, as a sub section of Trinity House, as both are independent of each other under the stewardship of the UK Secretary of State for Transport - which given the benighted Chris Grayling’s performance in every other area for which he is responsible makes me think it’s entirely possible that he’s sold the lighthouse to the Americans.....

According to the light house website the light house is a listed building operated jointly by a local trust and the Northern Lighthouse board. It was Manned until 1986 and is now operated remotely.

Although I have looked at the website I am still wondering what makes it Egyptian. 36m Pink Granit tower 55 m abouve Sea
I don’t remember it being mentioned when I was last there or I would have asked.

I hope you are right. Tradition has it that you date the article as 1st April.
Very misleading when it is not dated as the internet gives it a life for ever.

Damn right. If the content isn't withdrawn after the April 1st date expires, it looks a lot less funny - just mystifying.
