Radio four did an in depth investigation of the pros and cons, financially, to society of smoking.

According to this programme, smokers live on average 6 years less (76 as opposed to 81) than non smokers.

They tend to die from incurable diseases that only require palliative care.

Therefore society saves 6 years' worth of pension,

and billions in terms of health service resources.

Smokers contribute 8 billion per annum to the treasury via direct tobacco taxes.

So who's the bad guy?

As an ex-smoker who was brought up in an era where smoking was the rule rather than the exception, and when you could hardly see across a pub at night due to the smoke, I find this present day holier than thou attitude to be deplorable.

Go find your own pub, and on the way there change your socks and invest in a decent deodorant. Ah Ah,,, Don't drive there in that diesel 4X4 and by the way please don't come here again with your girlfriend, I find ugly wimmin spoil the taste of the beer.

One of the things that stops me giving up is the dread of becoming a non smoker. I guess we wont be sitting together enjoying a pint any time soon, as you will have had me KILLED.

I can never make out why Ex smokers kick up so much fuss about fags, in fact more so than people whom have never smoked at all! Is it because they still yearn to try one? Myself I packed it in 7 years ago and took up drinking more regular. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I must say though my clothes at the end of the evening after visiting pub smell no different to when I did smoke, so no real change there but I am normally too p*ssed to notice anyway! Then again I accept that people should have the right to relax and have a fag if they desire and if people are so anti why do they insist going in those places, after all there is the beer garden!

Although I am a pretty chilled guy and really did not experience a 'cold turkey' when I gave up, I do laugh at those biting thier finger nails, perhaps its causing them more damage to their health with mental stress, which too like smoking could bring on a stroke maybe!

All I can say Woof is stuff the current trend of constant political correctness, and let people enjoy their vices and chill out and enjoy life while it last's. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think blanket banning of smoking is an infringement of Civil Liberties.....I am a smoker but I choose NOT to go to a non-smoking restaurant/pub/bar for that very reason. Owners/tennants/landlords should have the right to determine which way their particular establishment should be designated, then EVERYBODY has the freedom of choice.

Haven't you noticed too...thats since the banning of fox hunting.....there now seems to be more flattened foxes moulded to the road!

All I can say is that I still want what we had socially and not want the 'Shirt tail lifters' in parliament are dictating what we can have!

As I am now on day4 of trying to give up the dreaded weed let me just say am not doing it 'cos Liar Blair is pinning me into the corner but because after 30 yrs its about time...
yes getting all the symptoms of crankiness and longing but I am determined this is now my 5th attempt.
No I will not become a rightous reformed smoker good luck to you all and the comment:- banning of smoking is an infringement of Civil Liberties.....I totally agree.

I suspect "Mr Wetherspoons" decision was more likely to have been the result of "legal implications" rather than concern for anybody. I remember a bar in Vail, Colorado that had a prominent sign on the door that said "There are no No Smoking Areas In This Establishment". Doubt that it's still there but i hope the it is.
