The dreaded trailer snake

Regarding balance and tow ball load. On my 21fter about 950kg boat 300kg single axle trailer I currently have pushed the boat back to near balance. It has moved back 32cms (over a foot) and still has some weight on the draw bar. When it is in normal location on the trailer I reckon more than 120kg weight on the tow ball. Disconnected I can have 2 people in the back of the cockpit with no concerns about tipping the boat up. This might give people an idea of draw bar weight needed for good towing. In fact IMHO tow ball weight should be as much as towing vehicle seems to be able to take before depressing the back too much. good luck olewill

The thing is, European cars have the maximum trailer noseweight regulated by law. Some countries' police forces are stricter on it than others but the worse ones will simply pull you over, uncouple the tow hitch, and stand the jockey wheel (or the hitch itself) on a set of scales. If that exceeds the number on the towing hitch approval plate (or the maximum permitted on the car's Certificate of Conformity), they issue quite severe on-the-spot fines.
