The Dig

But they still robbed and desecrated the grave.
And for what? To be able to say, look at me I am an archeologist. That this thread has been posted is an indication the only value of their so called important work is to produce an alternative TV program to Strictly. In the end archeology is no more than entertainment for the masses.

I have no great love for archaeologists in general, but I have always regarded the subject as just an extension of history, a subject that I fell out with when at school. Instead of searching libraries for written evidence archaeologists basically dig. I imagine that bodies represent only a tiny proportion of their work, which is mostly concerned with detritus. To give them their due, archaeologists have revealed an enormous amount about our ancestors, from the Victorians back to Australopithecus, and the impulse to find out about the past is as strong for many as the wish to explore space.

Ah... the world according to Tomahawk... Again...

I accept Tomma's point, but I have heard of where they drilled soil cores on Easter Island 2000+ miles from the Chilean coast. At the bottom they found tree pollen- the island was thickly wooded, further up they found more flower pollen- the forest has been cleared in places, then they found a heavily carbonised layer- the forest had been cleared and burned, then grass pollen- intensive agriculture, and then they found arrow heads across the whole island- the trees had gone, the human population had soared and there was a resource war, or certainly a war.
The picture given is a very interesting informative account of the plight of a remote island community, and how the people who might have made these ....

Moai

....were lost.
