The deep joy of Heads.

There is an excellent product called "Inflatable Boat Cleaner" that is flammable - my bottle is under a locker right now - but it is really excellent. One of those few occasions when you are happy to have spent the extra. About €8 ISTR but it is brilliant and at the start of the season it's nice to get the RIB looking like a new pin again. Unfortunately my chandler here can't get it in as there are safety issues with posting the product - or so he has been told. It's a very un-sexy bottle, but the product is superb.

David, agreed ! thats exactly what we have.. the one we tried to beat (16 E´s here !)

nothing beat it, I think the ONLY product that had marine on it I couldnt beat, for cheaper-- but, cos I am a sad ol bastarddddd.... I like to get it cheaper.... I know, I know.. nurse ????

That's interesting - this product we've been talking about is flammable. Have you had it confirmed that it is safe to use and causes no long-term damage?

I assume that the rubber used is either nitrile or neoprene (chloroprene) although this is just an informed guess. According to compatibility charts neither of these resists concentrated hydrochloric acid very well. The best hose on offer for toilet discharge is SBR (styrene butadiene) and this does not rate very well for resistance to conc HCl either.

Having written that, I have put concentrated HCl down my sea toilet many times and close inspection finds no deterioration as a result. My work experience suggests that the resistance chart gives guidance on long-term exposure rather than a once-through exposure lasting minutes only. So the message seems to be that you are taking a chance but not much of one.

So far as the ceramic bowl and plastic parts are concerned I think there is no appreciable risk on short-term exposure.
