As a result of recent threads in relation to idiots casting off unattended boats and the narrowboat that broke its moorings at night whilst the river was in heavy flow a potentially life saving solution has come to mind.

Attach one of those personal attack alarms to your boat with a length of fine line from the alarm pin to either a dedicated peg on the bank or to one of your
mooring spikes. In the event of a breakaway the alarm would at least give you a heads up rather like a smoke alarm.
What do you think - Dragons Den or Patent office. Yes I know I've blown it by posting on the forum.

Anyway it's a £5 simple solution that might just save a life.:)

I think it's agood idea but suggest the link goes to slack in the anchor line. The thinking being that naughty kids would probably work out that yanking the bankside wire resuults in emerginging boaters in various states of undress and distress.

Good idea, I use the pin type as an intruder alarm, attached to a piece of nearly invisible fishing line and passed through the weather boards to a convenient anchor point, in my case the engine stop.
Anyone walking on the cockpit bridge deck or messing at the hatch is guaranteed to set it off.
Also came in handy when I used to sail with my son who has a significant learning disability. If I was going below and leaving him in the cockpit I would attach the line to his life jacket in case he went wandering. It had enough slack to let him be comfortably seated at the tiller, his favorite task, but would alarm if he moved any further from the hatch. Learning together, sailing was new to me as well, meant he was always an important part of the crew and this gave his confidence a great boost.
He has just started college so is now too busy for sailing with his old man but I believe getting a good sense of all the various elements that go into sailing helped greatly with his development.
