The Cost of Using The Thames

I have to say that I get really, really excellent value when using the Thames.
In fact it doesn't cost me a penny more than the cost of my fuel!
But then again, I only use my boat of the tidal stretch of the Thames under the P.O.L.A.
Perhaps you guys should try it sometime, it can save you a lot of money.

Yes, but it's like going to the Cinema, we go and see the film, you just walk around the lobby looking at the Popcorn.

What a good analogy it is a very nice lobby mind with lots to see, but there is no where to sit down and stop without having to use the doors marked private which only open for a few hours a day.

Holland

At the end of our 1st year in Holland, it has been a wonderful summer of boating.
Our mooring has been relatively expensive as we are within 20km of Amsterdam, at €2.5k for 6 months summer and winter ashore in a heated shed at another €2k. But I am not paying any licence fee!

I know Holland is very different with some of the major canals used commercially, but I suspect relatively few of the total. They have many bridges to finance, huge lengths of dijkes to maintain and a smaller number of locks. I have no idea how this is all funded, but clearly very differently to UK.

My last licence for the Thames (2011) was around £800 for theoretical use between Oxford and Teddington. Many overnight moorings cost £5 to £10 with no facilities at all. Water depth is modest, especially bankside.
The huge plus for the Thames is the wonderful scenery.

As are you...You may be able to watch the film, but its an ancient black and white film and yet it costs you a fortune for a ticket, whereas I get to see it all live and in Technicolor, for free!

Ireland Shannon Charges

Being reading some of the charges in the UK. I will not give out about Ireland again.
We have a 35' 1980 Broom with a sliding roof. We have to register it with Waterways Ireland and that’s it. No reg charge or annual fee. No compulsory insurance or annual survey. Not too many locks at €1.50 per use.
On the Shannon there are lots of places with excellent shower blocks ect.
I only pay €800 a year for the use of a private marina.

Probably why Eire is totally bankrupt and NI is subsidised up to the eyeballs by mainland UK. ?
