The Bristol Arms is closed

Spent 6 years in Shotley, back-along & the Bristol always looked after us well. It also served to keep the Shipwreck on its toes!

Shame, it will be missed but hopefully be born again. If only for the views.

Shipwreck 7/10.

Weather when leaving Shotley this morning 0/10 - windy, raining and lumpy sea. By Clacton flatish sea and bright. By Bradwell breezy and sunny. Lots of weather about so motor-sailing for speed. Back in 4 hours :) Friday and Saturday  forget it. My sympathies to weekend sailors (again) :(

we are "holed-up" in the Royal Clarence, nicely behind ( north east ) the victualling store
the CG have just issued a south west 9 warning.

We had many good meals in the Bristol Arms, despite the landlord/chef not being the friendliest of people. Food was always good though. Last time we went in there, they robbed us and another couple with some very manky fish and chips at silly money and the landlord got quite snotty when we complained, not been back since. We ate in there most weekends, sometimes twice, the other couple ate in there a lot more.

A shame to see any small business go to the wall though.

The food in the Ship(t)wreck we have always found to be appalling and overpriced.

As we had to drive down to the boat we always had the car in the car park. Didn't mind the short drive to the Hungry Horse in Nacton. Could have a meal for two for £10-£12.

Had a meal in the Shipwreck Sunday night, 6/10 for me, really dim staff but adequate food. Hope the Bristol is back up and running soon!
Heard the weather forecast today so made a run for it out of the Deben today and going to sit it out on the Orwell/Stour and go for some short blast sailing next couple of days.

Know the feeling Roger, (Sailorman Rog) you are repeating my experience of Gosport from last year.

Oh yes.... Tidemill and the showers were very good :) good food in the Olde Bell and Steeleyard, Kings Head, and somewhere else? I can't remember :D

We also know the feeling of being weatherbound in the Royal Clarence.
We were stuck there for a week last July.
Did the Dockyard Museum, sub museum, ferry to Isle of Wight, train to Southampton and spent the rest of the time watching the grey funnel line moving about, the Victory having her spars removed and the Clipper Round the World crews coming and going on final training.
The upside was meeting Pete (Habebty) for the first time (and going for a beer in Gosport with him) and finding the Jolly Roger pub further north of the marina, which was a great place for food and beer.

Last time I was there the food was very average and over priced for the quality; booze was also quite pricey IIRR.
Not much passing trade down a dead-end road. :(

The Shipwreck beer prices are crazy.
Sarah and Jamie now run the Rose Inn in Shotley, a short ramble from the marina.
£2.70 for a bitter. Fish, chips & peas for £6.75, from memory.
A good local shop.
