Splitting open containers and spreading contents over a world heritage site (or is that further east) is not my idea of folksy locals getting a well deserved reward for their efforts. Local or from far afield they should be ashamed and I hope they all get double hernias for their trouble!

Incidentally I saw some posts about why the ship didn't end up on the French side implying there was some dastardly plot afoot - last time I crossed the channel the ships drive on the right going down channel and with a strong SWly this ship could only be a UK problem. Lets's hope they get the fuel and containers off safely.

That feels better!

What's to discuss? No grey areas, they are thieves, end of story.

I think the boat breaking up was the reason for all the containers being dumped in the sea, and onto the beaches, not the locals!

As for them opening the containers, well in my book the damage had already been done, and if anything their presence will only speed up the clearance process, without them I m sure there would have been no panic to move the stuff. I would be more concerned with the wreck and all the fuel oil spilling into the sea, and the damage that will do to the coast and wildlife.

Given the history of this craft I would also like to see the report on why this happenedin the first place.

If the goods are already out of a broken container and scattered all over then fairplay to anyone who picks it up. Breaking open an intact, sealed container before rifling through the contents and spreading what you don't want all over the beach is just criminal though. The least the police could have done yesterday is make sure that any containers still closed remained so.

Pikies looks too much like pixies though.

My approach will be to put on a foreign accent, and cry. All my poor family's worldly possessions are in here, you see, like in the papers. Then after identifying the containers I will gettem craned off, yes, all these motorbikes are part of a collection and all this despite the fact that obviously even if they were mine the insurance co which has had bumper not--many-accidents year whilst charging loads for terrorist things has written them off. Oh yes, and all this sand and gravel on the beach, that's mine too. And also er quite fw of those pikey types need putting back in the boxes, they're our servants...

And a curse on all the dreadful pikeys! I mean pikies.

Not piskeys then from the other side of the Tamar?

Beats me why Plod/MCA/Receiver of Wreck doesn't just get a contractor in with a welding torch and weld the bl**dy doors shut as soon as they wash ashore.

Most containers/boxes have the owners name written on the side, so place a notice on it saying "property of etc etc" "Police aware" - then if any scroat tries to break in etc etc.

I'm not sure what HMC&E think of all these "sealed" boxes being broken into - I always thought it was an offence to break a seal without HMC&E being present or the person breaking the seal signed for it and the seal was kept and then passed on to HMC&E.

On another note, I noticed that 2 things were reported,

1. It might be 1 year before the wreck (Napoli) was completely removed - contents, ship, etc, etc.

2. Pikeys were scrounging about the site.

It appears to me that it might not be a bad idea to say to the pikeys "we'll turn our backs guys you go for it".

That way the beaches would soon be cleared of any other "interested" parties.
The contents of the ship would disappear as well as the ship itself - all in under 6 months and at no cost to the tax payer.

The logic appeals and I feel sorry for anyone who's personal effects were trashed by the little squirts. That doesn't seem to have appealed to the media nor did the aerials of heavy oil leaking out of the starboard side (yet).

That appears to be what happened until yesterday. In reality, anything with value disappears - but the packaging, polystyrene and any other rubbish has been left for the tide to spread far and wide along the coast. The cleanup operation becomes much much more difficult and longer lasting....

The salvors aren't scumbags; if they take stuff away, notify the authorities, and look after it until it's claimed, that's providing a service. How long is a motorbike going to last immersed in sea water?

The pikies selling stuff on ebay are another matter.

You've obviously never seen a pickey halting site after a few weeks. It bears a remarkable resemblance to the beaches in their current condition... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The West Country child\'s prayer...

"God bless Mother, God bless Father, please God send a ship ashore tonight!"

Bunch of scumbags.

Right, on both counts.

I played with aye, eye, "I" for ages and couldn't decide - so just went with "I".
