thanks to the family in the shetland, that decided to cut across my bow(and everybody else)as i approached brixham inner harbour, nursing a suddenly sick outboard in a busy starboard approach channel..as i throttled back, slammed into neutral, and hit reverse, with a multiton brixham beam trawler up my arse, and a 7 year old on board,it was gratifying to hear those warm w.midland accents enjoying their day as my motor stalled..i could have put my bowsprit to a better use..still,they give our brilliant lifeboat guys here good practise..

be quiet. rubbish sailors come from all over the place. so everyone born with the smell of sea salt in their nostrils will be a perfect sailor. i should get yourself a decent engine instead of getting ratty with everyone born in the west midlands.

Commiserations! A large Fairline did similar to me at the mouth of the Orwell last week end BUT more differentiation is needed from you. Was it the Birmingham Navy or the Black Country Marinos? You say a West Midland Accent- it could be the Birmingham Brawl or the Black Country Brogue. I suspect it was a Black Country Marino because they usually " give it some ommer" as they say. This relates to the fact that most anchors, chains ,shackles rigging screws etc. were bashed out in the Black Country until the 80's when the products could be bought from China cheaper than the metal could be bought here.
Brummies, on the other hand, made brass, bronze, gunmetal into fittings like Walker logs, paraffin navigation lamps, fairleads, electrical goods etc--things that needed rather more delicate work, but they also made engines so it might have been one of them!
Either way it was bad manners and not seamanlike-only too common these days.

Tend to agree with Hillyarder! I know some excellent midlander sailors all over the world and have also been on the sharp end of some abysmal boat handling by Devon folk on the Dart! and elsewhere.
