the next boat is gonna realistically be a Shrimper 19--and there ain't a lot of price difference between some of those

Word is, the people who have bought Select Yachts (aka Cornish Crabbers) and going to be marketing the Shrimper for considerably less money than it used to be. Can't confirm, though.

Re: The best Yacht under 20\'

Another vote for a Corribee. Definitely not going to miss mine, 'cos I'm not likely to sell it! When she got me back home on a horrible windy (F6 +), rainy night with two friends feeling safe and secure she shot up in my already high estimations. Last year, three people commented on how pretty she was, despite not being the best example of a Corribee. When I hear about other sailors spend so much time and money on their boats, I feel like I'm cheating.

Splinter is a similar boat, possibly in less demand than a Corribee...

They are already I believe for around £5K less. Still too pricey for me to have a new one. Mine is 29years old this year and still going strong.

Do you blind fold your crew so they don't get scared by the close quarters sailing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looking at the current asking prices though, they are still hugely expensive.

I'd have to say the Foxcub, but I haven't tried the Europa on the water (didn't like the cramped cockpit)

But it depends what you're looking for. If you want to overnight and have kids a Newbridge or a Leisure would probably be much better.

O yes. I sail now and then on a Prelude and find it very well mannered, but haven't been out in any more than a F3 so can't speak for it's sturdiness.

I was waiting for that !

No, father in law wears a deaf aid, it was a last resort to keep out the spray.

...and my sign language is really bad in a swell !!

Re: The best Yacht under 20\'

I guess you meant "don't" mention a Seawitch.

Probably a good family boat with it's higher coachroof and apparently sail well.

[/ QUOTE ] A what?

Perhaps you mean Sea Wych.

Sailing performance may not be up to some of the others mentioned but has proved to be a reliable seaworthy boat with accommodation for a small family considerably better than most similar sized boats.

Also an active owners association exists offering sailing and social events, technical help to members, a quarterly magazine and an an extensive owners manual.

Re: The best Yacht under 20\'

Well I'm going to chuck in an honourable mention for the Foxcub. Off the wind, it sails as well as anyboat I have ever sailed, and I think that list is probably in the high twenties by now. Very light, and I'm glad I never took mine out in a blow, but coped with a chop pretty well and loved long rollers. It was also kind enough to forgive the frquent clangings I gave it onto pontoons and buoys when I was first getting to grips with it.

Forgive the mispronounciation of Sea Wych. I thought Lakey had once had one but perhaps my memory is wrong? We shared the pontoon at Royal Vic with the Sea Wych's a couple of years ago and whilst they are not the best looking boats in the world, they have fabulous accomodation, I would hazard to say far better than any of the other boats mentioned.

Re: The best Yacht under 20\'

Yes Vic S [/pedant] picked me up on a quote from your post. I once posted a piccy of one on Windermere, but haven't had one.
The Foxcub (well the MK1 anyway) was designed by Uffa Fox to plane downwind and used to really fly, the downside was that it was a bit twitchy and could gybe easily.
I never went out in more than about 20mph of breeze, but didn't have to (couldn't) reef. It was a very stable boat with some pressure on the sails.
