To provide a balance to my previous post, and also just for fun, how about praising the angels as well?
This time I am naming names.
Richard Oswold, the Emily Morgan (57" Bowman) with me as cook/deckhand were hosting a charter party of German Professors in the Balearics. It was the end of the week and the winds had been rising, till we are screaming into our home port of Santa Eulalia Del Rio. Tacking up the harbour, George, the man with the cheque book, is on the helm, feeling for all the world like a seacaptain of yore. I know he's heading us onto the rocks, and we need to tack, so I've prepped the sheets and winches, and am standing by. I throw a nervous galnce at Richard. Time is running short, but George does not have the knowledge for the manouver. Up to now, he's been more interested in the booze and the wildlife. Richard, standing by his shoulder, says
"Would you mind if I take the wheel for a moment, please"
"Of course" says George, relinquishing the helm
We tack so quick you miss it if you blink
"Would you like to take the wheel back, George?" says the boss
and relax.
This man, when new crew joined the boat, would give such clear and easy instructions, vis
"You see that blue rope there? No, the one on the big winch? Yes, that one. Now, not yet, but when I call your name, I want you to take it off the winch, let it run out, and watch out for tangles."
Even people who had never sailed before could be useful crew thus
Bless him.
