The best online chandlery

Go into a real chandlery. The one you will expect to be there when you need a 2x8 countersunk A4 screw and a 45 mm jubilee clip.

You mean you don't keep a *personal* stock of countersunk & cap-head screws and bolts (hex & allen) in brass/zinc/ss for use as required??? †

I once found a supplier of nice stainless jubilee clips - perhaps motorsport (Demon Tweaks, ages ago) - wish I'd got more.

Perhaps my children will inherit the un-used contents of my BigBoxOfORings - along with the tub of "Random Nuts & Bolts (Too rusty to use, Too useful to bin)" ;-)

Non-boat, but I've just done an engine replacement on a 'bike - it was *soo* nice to be able to cut off rusted bolts, knowing that I had a stock of stainless allens ready to replace them.

† I think I've mentioned http://www.cultpens.com/acatalog/Cleo-Messograf-Pen.html before, but I commend it to the forum for making pre-chandler-visit notes.

Another "vote" for

Seamark Nunn - excellent service both mail order and in person
Force 4 - next port of call if Seamark haven't got what I want
Foxes are third on my "go to" list

I really try to use my local Chandlery but recently wanted a smear of Duralac. They offered me a 110ml tube (the smallest) for £15. Eliseparts sold me a 250ml tin for £8.34 inc. Obviously Eliseparts are not a marine outfit so will not be there for the jubilee clips!!!

Whilst I do understand the cost of running a Chandlery and do want to support them, sometimes the mark ups are eye watering.

Oh yes, well only stainless but yes. So many i can't find the exact one I need so i pop to the chandlery :)

I was trying to make a serious point though. Use it or lose it. In extrimis you see people go and try clothes on in the chandlery then go and buy them online. Might as well shoplift.

I agree

we do need to support them

there are two in wells

tough business in the winter time

just add up the value of the stock they are sitting on

and the cost of the bod at the counter

plus the rates

frightening

If I want it quicky, I pop into Yachtmail first, them Force4, both Bursledon.

If Im not in a hurry, I start on ebay and compare prices. Through ebay and online I have used numerious businesses:

The usual suspects as per above
PRS comms
Jimmy green
as well as a number of individuals who were looking to shift kit

Of course, the for sale on here is also good.

Looking at my purchase log, I tend to spend as much in the 2 local shop as I do online. My guess is that the locals make a better margin, so overall they are the winners.

I dont get how its tough for a chandlery in the winter. I spend a LOT more in the winter than I do in the summer. Average about £500/month on products and services for the renovation from oct - march then parts spending goes down to less then £50 / month in the summer.

So just by getting a price you know the mark up do you, or do you have access to the trade price list?

Do you wear clothes? If you do you are happy with with possibly 300% mark up.

You obviously do not understand the cost of running a chandlery. Whilst we are on the subject, your employer probably thinks your salary is eye watering.

Marine superstore have been excellent on price and prompt delivery. Free delivery over £100. Item was £90 something, still delivered free.
No connection just praise when due.

they also have a huge shop.

in which you can't buy screws, connectors etc except for a very poor selection in bubble packs. Nor can you ask advice, the assistant will just read to you what it says on the box if you do.

Force 4 bursledon at least have the rotating screw and washer thimgamy with good stock in, obscure stock of all sorts out the back if you ask, and people with years of experience of boats.

But if everyone buys online, is force 4 going to keep the shop open?

You get what you wish for.

I've ordered an awful lot of stuff from Force 4 and have nothing to complain about. Stuff arrives quickly and any little problems or mistakes are rectified efficiently.

+ 1 never a problem we even sometime have used them when it was a few £ cheaper else where because of very quick service

Most of the time I stay local unless they are ordering which I can do from elsewhere.
I feel for the chandlers, chatting to the owner of a local buisiness he said it's the council rates rises each year, the car park near him has dramatically risen to discourage visitors it seems etc., rent, increases in stock price year on year, he didn't go into staffing costs as I could physically see his face drain.
No doubt he has passing trade but I as a local support him as much as I can.

Marinestore - both on line and walk in (they're local).

Compass Marine (German, but with UK warehouse/office).

I use them for antifouling because they always have very good special offers around Feb/March/April.

But, they've been let down very badly by their UK couriers (DHL) on a couple of occasions, the latest being this April when they produced a Proof Of Delivery signature by someone 180 miles away

But Compass' UK people got a replacement order revved up and delivered in time for the boat being launched. :)

I've used Marinestore chandlery in the past but never again!

Wife bought us both new sail wellies for Christmas. I wore mine twice - first time in June I thought "right foot feels a bit damp". Second time definitely leaking. They told us to send them back but that they would need to be sent to their suppliers for inspection before they would send replacements. Sent them 20th June. A month later nothing heard so we emailed them - "ah yes we've just been authorised to replace them". Eventually despatched 31st July!! No apology, no refund of postage (it cost us £10 postage to send them back). Rubbish response!

Hmmm...just getting this feeling about their website. Problems registering and difficulties signing up for their newsletter with free money off voucher before making a purchase. I don't like spending money online without being fully confident of their legitimacy. I was surprised not to have heard of them from this forum before. Nothing to hang my hat on, just a feeling.

Thanks

Seamark Nunn, Foxs-IMHO the biggest, broadest selection of stuff I have ever seen. For SS bits and pieces I would always use A2A4, usually to be found at boat jumbles but a superb service online.

I find the problem locally is lack of stock. I've lifted and repainted the boat over the last couple of days and couldn't get what I wanted locally from the 2 chandlers. VC offshore, 3M cleaner and wax and Volvo anodes are hardly unusual items.

If they order in for you a) I'm expected to pay whatever bill is presented without costs agreed in advanced and b) when the stuff arrives in a week or so it's too late.

Is having 2 cans of paint in stock the same colour too much to ask?

Ordered on Sunday eve from marine superstore and it's with me by Tuesday. I do try and support my local business, but when you want to get things quick you are better off with the big outlets.

I get the support your local business thing, but they could do with being a bit more proactive themselves - I don't want to muck about ordering online - get some stock in!
