The best Go Pro alternative.... Meet Lily!

Lily does seem to be very well thought through, BUT it is only available to order in the US for delivery from February 2016 according to their web site.

It's quite a wait, but I'm tempted at 500USD, whereas the normal price is 1000USD, which is too steep for me.
I think it's a tempting prospect. Having played with cheap drones, I've found them pretty difficult to fly; Lily flies itself. I'm imagining some very attractive footage of my boat with this device.

But, will it quickly get samey with lots of similar sequences? Also, 2 hrs charge for 20mins flight (battery not user changeable) might get tiresome.

No is not, the price is $500 and likely to drop once competitors do the same. The higher price is just a gimmick to entice people into buying because they feel it is a "bargain". They will never sell at it 1000!

Not sure. There aren't too many droids like that at the £250-mark.

The concept of it is cool and i'm sure that DJI (and the rest) are very aware of the huge publicity that lilly has had and are in the works of doing something similar.

The things that put me off are;
1) It's being crowdfunded, so not actually made yet. Would like to see reviews first.
2) The top speed means it will be only useful for very slow activities (sailing, swimming, kayaking, skateboarding)
3) No interchangable batteries and 2hr charge time will make it difficult to get good shots.

Whilst it obviously has its flaws, just like all drones it is still an impressive bit of kit and the fact it homes in on a device means it's one of the few low cost drones that can actually be used from a moving boat. To my knowledge most return to a fixed gps position.

Can it be programmed to fly ahead of the target of camera-focus, rather than following at a distance which prevents clear detail and shows only the rear view?

For the boat, I'd be content with the thing on the end of a 50ft wire, whose catenary would hopefully keep it mostly out of shot. That would allow almost unlimited running-time.
