THE ASHMOUNT RALLY - May 10th/11th

Can you get up by car for the BBQ? It would be a pity to miss out entirely.

We were going to Greece on Friday but as the weather is looking good we thought we'd have a week on the Thames instead. Starting at Bray we I doubt we'll make it as far as Ashmount for Saturday unfortunately but we're bound to bump into you lot on the way back as we're going up!
Evenstar 3 is a Sealine S37 (I need a new avatar) with a forum flag atop the radar arch - say hello as we go by!

From Bray, you'll make it in a day and a half!

No excuses now, and bring some sausages /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

Folks,

I got a worrying email from the EA this evening:-

Emergency river closure

River Thames – Sonning Bridge

Thursday 8 May from 2pm
The River Thames at Sonning Bridge, near Reading will be temporarily closed to all boats from 2pm on Thursday 8 May for emergency repairs to the centre arch of the bridge.
Boaters will be advised as they go through locks leading to Sonning and there will be a patrol boat stopping boats coming upstream from Shiplake Lock.
We will do all we can to minimise the length of the closure and apologise for the disruption this will cause to our customers.

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

Very sad news considering the event in question...

Lucky for us, we're above Sonning, and heading upstream...

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

Right 40 knots through Henley got to get to Sonning before 2:00pm. What a buch the EA are, less than 24hr notice. I could have pushed on more today if known sooner. I'll be a bit cheesed off, if, having come all this way, I can't achieve my objective.

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

Brilliant !! NOT!

Inspired by geoffs epic trip from Poole, I set off single handed from Chertsey at around 2pm today and am now moored at Windsor. Intention was Henley tomorrow and then on to Castle Alexander on Friday.

So, I guess my next move will depend on early info tomorrow as to how long the closure will be in place /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

So where is the bit that says if your river cruising pleasure is severly disrupted then a licence rebate can be applied for!

If I was hiring from Fry's Island in Reading right now and planning to go south I would be mighty pi$$ed off.

Eileen, I've seen the EA minutes whereby riverside /bank and tree inspections are being conducted by mini-bus- - how on earth can you conduct proper inspections by mini-bus? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

I assume the word "emergency" in the phrase "Emergency river closure" would imply that they aren't just doing it to p1ss us off...

It looks like my contingency plan of mooring at Henley and taking the train might come into play! How's the dog?

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

Nothing on the EA website although there are two other items there dated 7th May. Strange! What about after working hours, can people get through then? This is total BS.

So call the Sonning Lockie on 0118 969 3992 and ask what's going on.
I'm sure he won't mind being called at this time of night if you explain there is no further info on the EA website /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

You wouldn't happen to have Shiplakes number too would you Steve? I suggested to Geoff he call them and I'll txt the phone numbers to him, as I expect he won't be online in the morning!

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

Just picked up this email this morning, I'm guessing because it happens a lot on Culham bridge, but I wouldn't be surprised if a car has damaged the top walls.

Also they have emailed the entire address list to everyone on the mailing list, not amused /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: Bridge Closure at Sonning this Thursday!

What address list? That's not a very smart thing to do - first lesson in emailing, don't publicise other peoples addresses!

I haven't received an email from the EA for quite a while and I used to get them very frequently.
