I wouldn't have thought being stiff would be that important on something like that.

would mean much more bracing, thicker ie heavier construction (== more expensive to built and run) and wouldn't help in anything.
Similarly, 50yrs ago we built v.rigid concrete frame houses, not anymore, we prefer them flex and move about (quake issues).
For other reasons same applied in cars with crumbling zones (or however you call them...) taking part of the impact.
It is getting more clear that for many things that the concept "if you cannot beat them join them" applies.
I guess an exception would be engine blocks but I'm not qualified there, LS maybe?
