...was good fun, and congratulations to Cliff for getting it off the ground.

Owing to commitments for other 'Butters, we knew that there would be a low turnout. And of course the F7 forecast wasn't much of an invitation.

So Cliff, Superstrath, Sgeir and crews met up at the St Bride's Hotel for Saturday PM drinks - we were the only visitors on the mooring buoys. Cliff headed over to Largs in the evening and managed to get her berthed in 25 knots (Cliff's account here). Cameronke gave us a call, saying it was pretty wild around Toward, but he might see us on Sunday.

Meanwhile, we enjoyed Superstrath's tremendous hospitality and it was marvellous seeing how much his children loved being onboard. We helped Superstrath explore the contents of his extensive wine cellar, gradually becoming more concerned about the dinghy passage back to our boat as the windspeed and alcohol levels increased.

We put on the overtrousers and lifejackets just as our dinghy flipped over in the wind. So off came the overtrousers and lifejackets and we kipped in Superstrath's luxuriously appointed three room and kitchen.
Next morning, it still looked pretty wild and we heard a gale warning for Malin, F10 imminent. The dinghy motor failed to surprise us, but being relatively sheltered now (the wind had shifted direction), we rowed back.

The afternoon sail south was into about 20 knots of wind, exhilerating once clear of the Cumbrae gap, on three tacks.

So, good initiative, but prone to vagaiaries of the west of Scotland's weather. Like Cliff, we heard the Arran flare report, but have no further info.

Anyone know how to repair a Yamaha 2B after salt water immersion?

Good fun indeed, thanks again for the initiative, Cliff, and for the use of Michael as taxi-driver. We probably would not have sailed this weekend without the inspiration. Oh, and I'm a covert to the Blackbush Whiskey!
There still seems to be an inordinate amount of wine and beer on SC, despite Sgeir's sterling efforts. I note also that there are 47 bottles of Schofferhofer left - I'm beginning to suspect that they reproduce in that cabin.
The kids did enjoy themselves - I always worry that they will get bored, but they like meeting people, and kept themselves very busy. Cameronke joined in by VHF and mobile phone, which means that there were four boats in spirit.
I'm game for another, or even a regular event. We might actually get the barbecue some time!

Alistair

[/ QUOTE ] I think you mean a CONVERT to Black Bush Whiskey - at least you spelt Whiskey correctly. [ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] Don't worry, I'll sterilise them when next we meet.[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ] That is half the fun of sailing / boating - seeing the kids enjoy themselves without the internet or other distractions.[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]Same as any engine - get it out as fast as you can, washed down with lots of fresh water, Spark plug(s) out and lots of oil down the bore(s) (WD40 or the like) drain sump oil if 4 stroke and refill after turning over by hand to clear the cylinder of surplus WD40. Spray all electrics with WD40, add fresh fuel and get her started ASAP. Make sure all salt water is washed off the magneto and around the top of the crank shaft (below the flywheel). I flipped a mercury 2t a few years ago under similiar circumstances but got it off the dinghy immediately and washed down in fresh water. Fortunately no water had entered the crank case and she fired second or third pull. Top crank bearing seized after she was sitting for a few weeks so stripped down and a new top bearing and top and bottom seals fitted - my fault for leaving some water sitting on top of the top seal (leaked some water down into the ball race).

Main thing is get oil into the bores and crank and get rid of the salt water pronto.

Leaving the next meet up to "superstrath" although posted a few suggestions - care to add some yourself? - hopefully thid time we will have more than 3½ turning out although considering the weather on Saturday I was suprised anyone turned up - I was getting ready to head for home before it turned nasty when you and SC arrived. TG for VHF.

Hi Guys

Once again sorry I couldn't make it. A single handed beat from Toward in an E-Boat was a wee bit daunting. Had tried to call you earlier but I think you were in the pub (I considered for a while coming down in the Laser).

Yup Cliff, using a hand held with only 2W but encouraged that you were picking me up in Largs (7 miles)

Really hope to make the next bash, howzabout that little anchorage just beyond the Burnt Islands up the Kyles

Glad everyone had a great time and apparently got home safe

Regards
Cameron

Beat back to Troon? Sod that for a game of soldiers - spent Saturday and Sunday nights holed up in Largs (SHMO's "request") and pottered back on Monday morning F2~3 NNW - genny out one side and cruising chute out the other for a while then wind dropped off, all cloth in then finally Iron Donkey into Troon avoiding the P&O.

Cricky, you mean to say you were all holed up in Largs on Saturday, meanwhile i was at home, day off, nothing to do, swmbo working, me sitting feet up watching Live8, and all the time i could have been over at Largs, annoying you lot!!!
Why did naeb-dy tell me!!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

You're not paying attention Alistair. Only Cliff was in Largs, the rest of the "fleet" was in Kilcahattan.

Oh, sorry, i thought you had all made it to Largs!
Well i could still have kept Cliff company, and brought over a bottle of Whisky. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[/ QUOTE ]You would have been more than welcome - we could have emptied the Black Bush then had a go at the Malt I found on board - I was bored on Sunday so had a little spring clean - Jeeez there were bottles stashed everywhere not to mention cases of beer and wine - I had forgotten how many lockers and "hidey holes" there are on the boat.

I could also have done with some help at getting rid of all the BBQ we had on board /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyway Alistair, why do you not read the posts? - there were several concerning the meet in Kilchattan Bay - I even posted Largs as a "bolt hole" if things got too lumpy - which it did for SHMO.

So back to the plot - Where and When? - Think we are looking at 16~17th this month but where???

Caladh harbour? I've anchored there without problem, but friends have told me that the sand has been so scraped that it won't hold in a blow. Nice spot though, but there are a few other anchorages in the area.

"yon wee anchorage" I believe is wreck bay - just on your port side immediately after one passes Burnt Isles heading west.

Nope - check your charts - the anchorage just past the Burnt Isles is Wreck bay, Caladh harbour is across the west Kyle on the western shore of the entrance to Loch Riddon.

The photo appears to have been taken OUTSIDE the harbour - to the east of Eilean Dubh - not inside.

Looked again - you are trying to confuse me by taking the photo at high tide - could be inside looking north through the north entrance into Loch Riddon.
