Thanks for nothing Oban

I was looking forward to a weekend in Oban, but they had no space for us, ( dispite phoning ahead) the only marina that has refused us, since we left Southampton.

What an odd reaction. I presume you know when your fuel tank's full. I also presume Oban/Kerrera know when they're full, phone calls or not. Unless, of course, your call elicited a guarantee of a berth, which is not apparent from your post.

No Room in the Inn or Oban

On a previous weekend there was certainly no discrimination, we were all in the same boat. Scottish,English, Dutch or Cylon, Just no berhs in Oban anywhere. Best to give Oban and Tobermory a miss at the weekends and anchor in the sealochs. Certainly not good to be turned away if you had booked ahead. Do not understand or wish to about the comments being made. We are delighted to welcome visiting yachts from England and all other nations. Plenty of Searoom for us all on the West Coast of scotland.

Dispite my original post being hijacked my point really was that.....I do not expect to be able to book berths (However some marinas allow it)

Not everyone wants to moor/anchor, when you are new to an area you are wary of that (well I am anyway)

Despite the "yes we have room just turn up" we checked on a Sunday evening after a trip from crinan in the rain to be told Oban was full, we had a plan B which we switched to.

If we had got into Oban I would of stayed a couple of days, I had a promise of a pint from Webby and discussion on Scottish Independance (NO NO do not go off on one about that) but I just took the huff and carried on to the Caledonian canal......Please do not try and tell me what I missed, I have lived in Scotland all my grown life I know whats here.

In answer to the Soft South coast....lets remember that Boating creates jobs, and we need them in Scotland badly............

For entering into communication with Webby an anchor is a definite bonus - trying to get to Seil from Oban by road can be done but not very often or conveniently during the day. You would have been disappointed, though. Webby was sighted heading south down the Sound of Gigha a wee while back.

Kerrera probably did have room when you called but they tend to take first come and I have noticed a definite tendency towards earlier afternoon arrivals at Oban, Tobermory, and other frequented spots.

Not sure I understand

the reason for this post.
Oban Marina was full to capacity when the OP wanted to berth, so what's the point here.
If it was to inform that it might be best to arrive early at certain times, or to let others know that being a marina that is modest in size, they might not be able to be accommodated, then that would be fine.
It seems however that the OP just wanted to have a mump and a moan....takes all sorts though hey :)

Why not join the campaign to discourage soft marina dwelling southerners from venturing north and there may be space?

Jeez what is it with you people ! - Early this week I enquired after a boat advertised on the Isle of Skye and as soon as the vendor found out I was from England she refused to let me view it. About time some people were dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

I'm astonished you found a Scottish person on Skye- the island is infested with English refugees.

S'funny, I thought they were all German, Polish & Irish.

Nah - thems the Tour- oids. The engerlish settlers are all behind twitchy curtains watching telly, complaining to each other about the weather and wondering if they should have stayed in Bolton..

I would be surprised if your geographical location / accent / nationality was the reason for not dealing with you.
Be surprised.

I emailed about the boat - a Hunter Europa - and got a reply stating the boat was available for viewing. After I emailed giving my address (in the interests of honesty in these days of scams) all went quiet. Five more emails over a week expressing polite interest and requesting to view and no response. I got a friend to try -nothing.
He had the great idea got a friend with a Scottish name to try and hey guess what - an invite to view within two hours. Sad or what.

Very strange . Are you sure she was Scottish ? Lot of White settlers up there

I shouldn't think they'll be complaining about the weather. The Northwest of Scotland, and the Western Isles have had almost no rain for months now. Some places have a water shortage - it's just that you don't here anybody moaning about it.:)

As for the OP, has he ever gone to a hotel, for example, and been told, "Sorry, we've no rooms, but if you go on a couple of miles, you'll get something". What's the difference?

Perhaps its down to those from down south who tell you they want to view your boat. You then make the 150 mile round trip to your mooring to find either they dont turn up or if they do its not really what they want.

To be honest, Oban has done you a far greater service than you will ever know. To spend an evening with Webby really is something to be avoided.

Its a shame this has happened, it isn't always so but as someone else posted, Oban and Tobers do get very busy at weekends.

Yea, they all moved north on 31 May last year to get onto the island with their iPads in there hands as they had been told the could upload Skye on to Mac-iCloud. :D

"Skye Television?"

"But who wants to fit a bludy great dish to the side of their hoose and pay 20 quid a month just tae watch programmes about Portree?"
