Had the misfortune to have a rope snag my prop last Saturday (23/04) in Chichester harbour, near to the Hayling Island Sailing club. This was attached to a mooring sinker or such like and nearly pulled the outboard off as we juddered to a stop. Some helpful young persons in a RIB came over to help but couldn't unwind the rope and so cut it. The prop was then able to turn. We were on a falling tide and by this time we were hitting the bottom of the sandbank. We reported the situation to the coastguard and whilst talking to them, Frank Dunster of Hayling Island Rescue turned up and eventually managed to pull us off the sandbank. I asked how much I owed him for the rescue but he waved me away. Apparently he does this voluntary work on a full time basis.

There is, or used to be, a group called Friends of Hayling Island Recue, through which you could make a donation to help with expenses. I have looked on line and the account number quoted (from 2008) comes up as invalid when I tried to make a donation. Does anyone know how I can make a donation to Hayling Recsue? I have just ordered Frank's book, which is also on sale to help with his costs and is called Confessions of Hayling Rescue.

This 2014 post gives BACS details don't know if they are the ones from 2008 or newer...

He does a great job, but single people missions ring alarm bells to me. Frank chooses to be on-call 24/7 365 days a year, he chooses to sleep on board his RIB etc and to put all his money into it. I don't know why...

There was a lot of chatter a few years back about lack of funding etc. BUT it would be easier to get funding if he had a website, with a donate link etc. There is something odd about the configuration - you donate to the Friends of Hayling Rescue not Frank.

I'm not saying if I sailed down that way I wouldn't donate, nor am I saying I wouldn't be pleased to see him approach if things were going wrong. Just that something about the "one man saves 200 people a year" headlines isn't quite what it seems...

From here

"The Friends of Hayling Rescue Bank account is held at Barclays Bank, HaylingIsland, Sort Code: 20-69-34, Account Number: 03342387"

...not sure if that's the one you used, but it seems to date from post-2012 so may be valid?

He rescued me once as well (dis-masting at the entrance to Chi Harbour), so I can definitely empathise..

Thanks for that, it was the bank account number that I had. I have re-entered it and it worked for my donation this time. Must have mis-typed it earlier.

No matter what adverse comments he has received, I was very glad of Frank's help and long may he continue his good work.

It's a little while since I contributed, so this has been a good reminder thanks.

If Britain ever runs out of people like Frank, it really would be time to ' stop the clocks, turn off the lights ' !
