Thames Water are planning to build a "super sewer" under the tideway to help collect the sewage which regularly flows into it. Good idea.

They are planning to use Barn Elms between Putney and Barnes as the main construction site for seven years. Bad idea.

Thames Water is ignoring industrial brown field sites and prefering to use the cheaper option of digging up the publicly owned land at Barn Elms, one of the few beautiful green space left on the banks of the Tidway.

The petition says it all:

http://www.gopetition.com/petition/40513.html

Please read and sign if you agree and forward it to those who may not be aware.

I do hope I haven't broken any forum rules but feelings are running high about this and it very much affects boating on the Thames in this area.

While i do sympathise with you , i think you need to have a read over the petition. It is very sensationalist , and there are several contradictions in it ...

For example it says ...

'A ventilation column 15 metres (46 feet) high ......... to ventilate and filter the air in the tunnel , with a risk of smell. '

and then a few lines further on ....

'We will be left with a permanent 45meter ventilation column continuously spewing out rank air. '

So it has gone from a column 15 metres high , which has a risk of a smell , to one that is 45 metres high continuously spewing out rank air.

It also says in the petition ...

' They estimate approximately one truck every 20 minutes, 24 hrs a day. ' ( 3 trucks an hour ;) )

Then , again , a few lines further on ...

' The area could be disrupted by up to 10 trucks per hour accessing the site 24/7 '

I appreciate you are concerned , but if you want people to take this petition seriously , you need to write it seriously , not like a headline in a tabloid.

Sorry.

It wasn't me that wrote it, and I don't personally know those that did, but I have their email addreses and will let them know to see if it can be amended.

I think you are right that it is a little sensationalist with some errors, and those affected can be a little over enthusiatic in their descriptions due to high emotion.

Please be sympathetic though...digging up Barn Elms for 7 years is going to causea lot of long term misery.

I hope you will support the cause (remember Tunnel sewer good, construction location Bad) and sign and pass the petition on.

Deja Vue

Suspect that Bazalgette is smiling quietly to himself.A few years disruption during the 1800s gave us 150 years use of his most excellent sewer. The objections then were of course different but amounted to the same thing and as for complaints about lighting...in one of the most light polluted places on the planet.:)
