Thames Stop and Search

we got stop searched on the ouse in york during royal ascot !just coming up to the archbishops palace ,the police were patroling as the queen was staying there . they stopped us under a pace act ,and prevention of terrorism act . it was funny watching a 6 foot copper climbing off a rib and onto our little 19 footer !

Hmm, I smell copper!

Seriously, though, do I have to carry a British Registry of Shipping document, which I am sure I don't have and what happens if I can't produce it on the spot?

Do I have to present my docs within seven days at my local police station, which was closed a couple of years ago, or do I get a clip around the ear for being a cheeky scamp?

Mind you, it seems whatever you do these days the police just nick you under the prevention of terrorism act.

"32 in a 30 zone. It's a show trial and life for you me laddie."

Had no problems of the nature you describe at all.
Wanted us to identify ourselves but did not ask for any documentation. Where did we normally keep the boat. Where were we coming from and going to. Could he have a quick look round down below.
Whole shebang took around ten minutes then the launch was back and he was gone.

The dog left him alone thankfully........

Geddit! You are not the one mentioned in the Yachting Monthly article.

Still the question remains, someone on the Thames was asked to produce his British Registry of Shipping document.

Just had a look at your pic again. See he is boarding you from what looks like a Botnia Targa. Lucky, lucky man.

Aye, bacon does has a distinctive aroma. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Over five years ago, we were on the waiting pontoon outside Port Solent, I walked up to 'land level', can't remember why now. I was stopped by a youngish bloke in civis'. He asked me various questions, where from, going where etc. Before I gave any information he showed me ID. He politely asked if he could check the boat over, why not?

It turned out that they were monitoring boats on the look out for illegals. Fair enough.

Stop and search offers no powers to demand any kind of documents. We can request that someone show us some documents, but it's purely voluntary. I don't know the laws regarding boats, but different laws provide the power to demand driving documents for cars, for example. Whilst I realise it might seem like a pain, and/or an intrusion of privacy, if you don't have anything to hide, is it really a problem? Wouldn't you prefer that a few innocent people get searched, and the person carrying the 100lbs of C4 gets found, rather than nobody gets searched in order to not upset their feelings, and then some innocent pub gets blown to smithereens?

Cardo et all

I think this is great and would have no problem being stopped and search.
Especially as it may help prevent another bombing.

As Cardo states, if you ave nothing to hide what is the problem?

A reli of mine is in the Met on the river and they have my full support here.
Lets hope the net is closing!!

The problem is that the tempation to go 'fishing' is just too hard for them to resist. I don't think many have a problem with co-operating, but it can be taken too far - for instance.

I do see both sides of the coin, but I've worked for the Govt in the security arena, and even though I "have nothing to hide" I damn well value my privacy.

Fishing. If only.

Know what you mean.

On the patrol boat I work on it has been suggested we fish, water ski, dive and all sorts other than what we actually do!

Let's not get into copper bashing here. They have enough problems like how to occupy all that time off sick and how to get cheap fares to commute from New Zealand. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Having spent a considerable time in NI during the troubles and the Balkans, fishing was, and probably is, one of the best ways of gaining intelligence. It was never very successful in detecting and capturing the bad boys and it was the main reason for contention between the army and the public.

Trouble is, it appears that the UK mainland police are using fishing techniques to try and detect and capture the bad lads and it is just not going to happen unless you stop every last man and woman in the country on a regular basis.

All this anti terror posturing by the police will only have one effect, and that is the alienation of the very people they are supposed to protect.

I hope we are not heading for a police force that is an arm of the government,(Gendarmerie) instead of a police force which works with the consent of the public.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fully paid up member of the establishment. I have absolutley no problem with being stopped and searched, but the long term consequences for the police who are stopping and searching people who do object to it cannot be ignored and the objections and resentment will increase as time goes by.

It has alienated many people in NI and I can tell you it has alienated many people in the Balkans.

And as for proper fishing whilst on duty, I am told that one hand grenade can produce a lot of trout!

Don\'t be so ruddy PC about it

There isn't a single poster on here who isn't 100% behind the Met and the security services in efforts to protect us from these terrorist fanatics.

However, how bleeding likely is it that some floppy-fringed Rupert in a Targa 34 is carrying half a ton of ANFO in the owner's cabin? (Unless he's legitimately taking it down to some Excel armsfest to sell to an oil rich small nation, of course..)

Forget the PC nonsense. I want my considerable chunk of Council Tax that goes to the Met spent EFFECTIVELY and EFFICIENTLY. That means targetted searching of boats piloted or crewed by those who match the profile of 'islamic' terrorists.

Any misuse of the terrorist laws to protect Bliar and his cronies from embarrasment by fathers for justice, fox hunters or opponents of the B467 traffic scheme is an utter misuse of power and will lose popular support very rapidly.

Point made.

Re: Don\'t be so ruddy PC about it

Actually, it did occur to me that a cursory glance in the owners cabin isn't going to stop a waterborne terrorist outrage. If you are going to board and search, damn well search! I assure you, the novelty of going through every cupboard and hidey hole will soon wear off.

Gesture policing, but ineffective.

Re: Don\'t be so ruddy PC about it

You don't know their modus operandi, so I wouldn't try to second guess them. They may be taking surreptitious swabs and putting them through a mass spec, or using sniffers for explosives. The former is used if you drive into upper level of Canary Wharf, where they swab steering wheel and door handles, and mass spec the swabs for explosives traces before you can drive in.

Re: Don\'t be so ruddy PC about it

Don't worry, it won't last. Once we've all got ID card tthey wont need to stop and search everyone. A photo taken from a distance and a computer match will give them all the information they need.
