I've just moved to Putney, where there is a public slipway. Is there any bylaw or licensing requirement for me to sail our Topper and / or Wayfarer on the Thames between Putney and Hammersmith bridges? We plan eventually to join one of the Putney clubs, but can we go it alone for a while?

Thanks,

Tim

As Chris says, no paperwork needed. Just don't lower your centre board too soon when you launch. It is very shallow around that slip. Also bear in mind the tide is quite fast there so make sure you have paddles and be prepared to paddle like stink to get back against any tide.
Other than that... enjoy but remember motor boats coming up and down are restricted and cannot deviate from the channel.

Agreed, not the most ideal place but can be done, if you have a car why not head up-towards Richmond / Teddington where tide is not as bad or go above the lock as there are a few sailing clubs (as well as one at Twickenham). If its for kids (as its a topper?) then I would strongly recommend further upstream.
