Hi there - I've recently bought a 30' motor cruiser that I'd like to moor somewhere between Banbury and Oxford.

I've heard some horror stories on the cost of moorings in the UK (the boat is currently in France) - is there a 'working man's budget option'? or should I just emigrate for good?

Will I also need a separate river licence and if so who controls these?

Thanks

You do need a river licence, contact the Environment Agency, I warn you though your probably looking at around the £300 mark. As for moorings im further down than that and I can't help. Good Luck.

Being a new comer to this I've had cause to check moorings and licenses on the Thames - down river. Yep, the license comes from the EA and is charged by a calculation on the area of your boat (length x beam) and if you want to use it beyond Teddington, you'll need another license issued by the British Waterways.

Can you feel the £££ slipping from your hands?

Can't speak of moorings in that area but here - Shepperton to Hampton - but I've seen cheap that are not fit for human habitation to expensive marinas and lots inbetween. Around the £35 to £50 per foot is a guide.

Just a quick note to the above - you do not need a BW licence below Teddington on the Thames, just if you wish to visit canals and other inland waterways. The Thames below Teddington is controlled by the PLA.
