2011 update for alerting other YBW users to Thames River conditions and other urgent information for river users.

Any registered user can post a message on this thread (and this thread only for reasons that will become clear) if there is a sudden change in conditions or other urgent information. With the number of people here on the river, this has proved to be a very valuable tool.

If you want to receive alerts, click on 'Thread Tools' at the top of this thread and select 'Subscribe To This Thread' from the dropdown. Then select 'Instant Notification by Email' and then click on 'Add subscription'.

If you do this, ANY post to this thread will automatically be emailed to your registered email address. Provided you have a mobile with email capability you will then receive messages as they are posted without needing to visit the website.

Please note this thread is not for general discussion and ONLY to report river/weather conditions and other urgent information which may be helpful to river users so please, do not post here unless that is the case.

Latest EA stream warnings/status are available here:

If there were any non-river problems, such as a fire or suspicious / burglarious activity (such as Gavi had a couple of years ago) could you use it for that as well ?

Don't see why not. Its our thread so we can use it as we think fit.

I think the main issue is that it shouldn't get clogged up with any spurious chit-chat so serious info only.

You may notice that I have changed the first post wording slightly so that it also includes 'other urgent information' rather than just river conditions. This could usefully include info re unscheduled lock closures, serious incidents, non availability of pump-outs etc. Maybe even 'live' feedback re major hold ups at locks?

Happy to help with lock problems as i hear of them assuming i am on duty ....

It won't be foolproof though because if i am very busy i may not be able to access the computer to let you know , so don't rely on it , but i'll do my best .

... and let us not forget that the forum helped solve it :)

It's an excellent idea,

With tough times a'coming folks should pull together in the common interest, for practicality's sake - if nothing else.

With the remit now set, perhaps it might be a good idea to rename the thread (well, start a new one) with a more informative name?

"River Thames Conditions - water flow, floods, lock closures, staff shortages, thefts, fire, point of interest" Umm, a bit wordy.

Not sure if this will be the 3rd or 4th year that we will have run this 'info' thread. A couple of years back when the flooding was bad it proved invaluable.
Just waiting for Dan to make it 'sticky' so that it stays at the top of the page.

I live in hopes that the EA will eventually provide a user facility like this on their own website which will allow us to directly contribute real time info and also receive RSS feeds whenever new info is posted. In the meantime this little effort of ours must suffice.

River is closed between Shepperton Lock and Chertsey Lock while they search for the two missing people talked about on another thread.

I'm not back at work until friday , so if anyone hears when the river is re-opened , can you post it please .

Thanks

I have

just been playing with my new tools having agreed to be a part time moderator once more so I think I have made this sticky...

Dans off overseas so its James or myself from now on.

Cheers

Is this section limited to the non-tidal Thames?

Yes, this thread is because EA publish details regularly and the locks have signs on them when conditions change.
EA also have river level monitors which are available to view in (nearly) real time.

AFAIK the tidal bit is very much WYSIWYG.
(memo to me - check to see if any levels data is available downstream of Tedders / Richmond.

If you mean this forum, then it is open to all nice folks, but Tideway information is scarce as there aren't many boats resident thereon.
