Thames Registration Changes from 1st January 2011

I think that's a great idea. Apart from anything else, this forum represents a significant number of people with boats on the Thames and should be part of the consultation process.

Mind you whether we're formal enough for EA remains to be seen.....

By the way, if you think you're not getting much from RUGs on the upper river, have a look at the Tidal RUG - nothing from them since early 2008!

Which bodies/committees are you thinking of? (please don't spoil my day !)

I don't have any particular one in mind but from RUGs, ATYC, WWG, TUGn, IWA and RYA there must be one that has aims similar to ourselves, and one in which you would hopefully find people of similar mind to yourself.

RUG: requires you to own a tweed hat and green wellies
ATYC, you should have a regular (paid) crew for fenderlifting
WWG, bring your own spade
TUG, only cyclists in Spandex need apply
IWA, nearer, but narrowboat ownership is preferred
RYA, the Y bit is a huuuge clue...

I reckon the Virtual Yacht Club has something going for it and the B1 has what it takes.

Given that it would be virtual, the VYC burgee is an empty burgee mast, or perhaps the burgee is almost see through.

Clearly my medication dosage needs changing:-)

I have to admit I was thinking the same, but you worded it better!

ATYC with only less than 10 clubs that regularly take part in events and only 4 clubs competing at the rally, needs to get all the other clubs involved or it defeats its whole reason for existing.

The important bit about TUG is the "n", ie TUGn as:

Thames User Group (Navigation)
The Thames User Group (Navigation) was formed to coordinate any necessary action that might affect the health of the River Thames as used by the members of the regional boating bodies. Its membership covers all boats used on the Thames from Paddlers, Rowers, Sailors and other unpowered craft through cruising powered boats; the trade and the passenger boats. Approximately 30% of the inland boating community.

This seems to fit BoatOne quite well does it not?

You probably all know this but for those who don't:

MEMBERS OF TUGn
Russel Chase Thames Hire Cruiser Association
Michael Chambers Thames FERAC
Kevin East Thames FERAC and Canoe England
David Fletcher Chairman NABO
Keith French MBE Chairman Passenger Boats Association
Mike Gates Chairman TBTA
Louis Jankel Thames FERAC – NABO
David Moss Thames WWG – Chairman Addlestone Canoe Club
Jeremy Munk Thames FERAC – Past President BMF – TBTA
Michael Shefras MBE Chairman Thames Valley RYA – C/m RUG 8
Andy Soper Chairman DBA (The Barge Association)
David Sowter Thames FERAC - Weybridge Mariners & Thames Scout Cruising
Chris Turner Chairman of RYA Inland Navigation Group & C/man of ATYC
Paul Wagstaffe MBE Thames FERAC – TBTA Secretary
Richard West British Rowing – Thames Rowing Council
CORRESPONDING MEMBER
Roger Squires London Region IWA

Now, how is this supposed to 'fit me quite well' ?

Heres a really stoopid question...

Why is Thames User Group not have EVERY user (ie us!) as members automatically?

We are Thames users after all.

Why are the folks that these guys represent never given the chance to choose who represents them?

Otherwise just another old boy network.

Just buy the right tie and you're in then?

Dont Panic

Unless there is funding coming from DEFRA to support the Thames the NWC (New Waterways Charity) does not really want to take it on as some of the infrastructure will need major money spending on it in the future.

Also despite what is believed by many, even if the Thames stays with EA there will be savage cuts to the EA navigation budget, this will mean that locks will be unmanned and the service will just not be there, so be prepared for a lot of hardship.

My view is that if NWC can agree funding with DEFRA then it would be a positive move to join NWC as you will at least have agreed funding for 10 or 15 years.

Brayman has several ties. He wears them depending on which Pub he's frequenting at the time.

Or whichever Boat club has free Beer.

Don't knock it, it works... :)

" this will mean that locks will be unmanned "

That explains why we waited for days for a man in a uniform to come and lock us through......gave up in the end.

I am aware of that, but he said FURTHER DETAIL, so I was assuming this is a further new document?

The one on that link looks the same to me..

Oh I give up...have better things to do than score points!

Wasn't trying to score points just a tongue in cheek post:) probably might have been better aimed at 534l4rk
