Thames Registration Changes from 1st January 2011

Bad hair day today,

Typical EA, hit you with all the rules and regulations (most current boats on the River should comply anyway), threaten you with criminal sanctions and so on.

But, anything to offer in exchange for the mailed fist, No, of course not -
much promised flexible licensing; No, enlightenment as to STLs; No

Oh, we might get around to doing something in 2012, perhaps, maybe and then possibly not.

After all who are boaters - just an excrescence who provide a bit of money, and complain a lot.

Consulted with users - anyone ('cept B1 heard anything)
What a load of expletives.
Arrogant piles of poo.

(If anyone at Reading / Wallingford / Bristol reads this - perhaps a bit of PR wouldn't go amiss)

I have heard nothing at all prior to becoming aware of this notice when I was at PH this morning.

Looking at the ATYC website library discovers:

http://www.atyc.co.uk/cgi-bin/atyclibrary/c4pto.doc
and
http://www.atyc.co.uk/cgi-bin/atyclibrary/who owns the atyc.doc

Keeping people informed? I belong to a boat club which belongs to the ATYC but heard nothing thru those channels,,,,,

Hi - I hear you!
We have consulted with customer reps - regionally and nationally. We've got everything ready to push out some PR but just finalising the approach for the Medway before pressing send (Should be early next week). All customers will have full info in the renewal run and PR from next week. The national users requested the rolling year and I've said we'd look into that in Thames once the renewal peak of work is done (around late Feb). We've tried to sort out all that we can this time. Thames customer reps have had this info since Friday pm as we've got a meeting this Thurs. Happy to receive emails if there's anything arising from the forum - I can't keep checking the threads but email me at angela.quayle@environment-agency.gov.uk . Angela

For those of us a bit slow of uptake.....does this mean anything has changed or does this just lay out in print what was more or less defacto anyway ?

New items:-

1. Third party insurance
2. boats not actually on the river but offline must be registered

(2) is the important one for folks just coming on to the river, or who never go out and is in line with some (?)other EA waterways.

I think the way its been "announced" is just a bit heavy handed.
Would have been nicer to have posted something here, or on VisitThames to explain what it means, saying:-

"we've made some changes in line with the Transport and Works Order that we slid through last year without consulting anyone.

The official release has to be made in legal terms, but the changes are tidying up some loose ends (apart from the ones that we haven't a clue about, or don't understand) and we think that they should not be too onerous for current customers.

We are planning some more changes for 2012 but can't say anything, as it's very much under discussion and depends on what resources we have left "

We need better representation

I think they DID consult - the problem is that, as far as we are concerned (cos we have no specific knowledge) they didn't consult US.

There is a long list of organisations and customer groups that they appear to consult with including the RUGs, ATYC WWG DBA IWA RYA etc etc but none of them do a particularly good job of passing the information on to us - even if we belong to an ATYC member club as I mentioned last night.

Quite frankly, in my small way, I seem to do a damned sight better job of promulgating information than any of them, and I would also like to think that I have a better handle on which issues are important to us and how we would like to see things better organised.

Would you all be agreeable to me seeking the EA's formal recognition as a representative of the YBW Thames Forum ?

£619 for a BW Gold licence: If EA ask for more, I'll get one of those instead! LOL

Very interesting.....you can also pay the direct debit over nine months with British Waterways.
I am right on the boundary of their maximum width.

......very interesting!

Not sure how you guys are working out your figures but a Gold Licence (from BW or EA) will be significantly more expensive than an 'own waters only' licence for either.

I regularly calculate the difference in cost 'twixt a Gold and EA, and for me the Gold was nearly double the EA licence.

If you are a BW customer, you get a good deal. A Gold costs your BW fee plus a 30 day EA licence.

most "unfair"

Yes, Yes, and Yes.

?? I thought you already were ??

Wouldn't it be more useful to get on to one of the body's committees that's already set up? I can just imagine the groans from the EA if yet another boater's body demands representation.

Not knocking your zeal Tony but who's going to follow you when you decide to retire?

I agree. A more formal body might make more sense in terms of longevity and common voice. Unless we formalise ourselves as a club... The VYC - Virtual Yacht Club, then we could campaign on any inland issue. Just a thought!

Looks like I'll just carry on paddling my own canoe then - at least the licence is cheap.

Not trying to dishearten you, just wondering what the most powerful and sustainable approach to lobbying might be...
