We've been considering a holiday on The Thames for years.

Having our own boat abroad (Denmark) the obvious solution is to hire a boat.
Did it in France (Canal du Nivernais) and found it interesting but totally deserted, even the (few) cities we passed. Not a living soul in sight and while that might be OK some times we don't appreciate it for a whole holiday.

The Thames expectedly is different in more ways (presumably less French too :o). Happy to meet up with forumites, as previously on Beer & Natter events, SIBS and LIBS.

Any suggestions on hire (private or companies) and places/itineraries most appreciated. Expect to spend a week in late July, looking for a more than basic boat for 2 persons.

Danish eh! Hmmm! I'm not sure we should give you any advice. We had enough problems with Vikings in the past. Raping all our men and killing our women.

You been and gone and done it now Tony. When he comes roaring along the Thames pillaging all the monasteries tearing the thatch off our houses, casting his Runes everywhere, burning down villages and shouting "Thor forever" it will be your fault.

C'mon, now - the Vikings added to your genetic pool and the lassies they brought back paved the way for British foothold over here. At that time Norway and Sweden belonged to Denmark which translates to 'shared risk' in modern terms, and I'm sure the worst weren't really Danish .. ;)

I'm 30 miles south of Copenhagen - and so is our boat. 12 minutes between home and marina :)

Niiiiiiiice......lots of open water. 12 minutes from ours too so long as the traffic lights are green :)

Do let us all know if you come over....just don't bring the Gammel Dansk......PLEASE!

Promise - no Gammel Dansk.

I by far prefer one of the Aqua Vitaes - better known as snaps (better than German Schnaps) :encouragement: or one of the extremely nice beers from eg. Herslev or Braunstein (our local brewery).

Edit: Neither Akvavit nor open sandwiches (Smörgås in Swedish - Smörrebröd in Danish) are Swedish. Both are Danish (stems from before 1523 where Sweden separated from Denmark)

Akvavit is the name of my boat, personally my favourite one is the Norwegian Linie.

Love an open sandwich :-)

Do you wish to claim midsummer and crayfish parties as well ;-)

Open sandwiches are a part of our heritage. Perfect for lunch boxes (or anytime). Also come in posh versions which seem 'too much' to people appreciating the more humble lunchbox variety.

Rye bread is mandatory :) although some prefer white bread with certain toppings (marmalade, honey, chocolate spread, cheese etc.)

Not to worry.. We just add up Scandinavian, British and other nationalities and make open sandwiches to meet al preferences.

Rye bread, buttered to taste and then any topping (almost any...)

Then good beer, and:

"Akvavit is served with all fat dishes.
All dishes are considered fat, except porridge.
Porridge is not served."
