Thames Festival

Its the Mayor's Thames Festival this weekend - all the classic boats are at St Kat's.

Was down there this evening and there are some beautiful boats in the dock, from 30's cruisers to some great sailing hardware.

With the wind this afternoon, some of the boat handling as the boats emerged from the lock into the marina was interesting - to say the least - but no visible damage (except possibly to self esteem!).

If you're around London over the weekend, then a worthwhile wander.

There will be plenty of classics around all week, too, including the tall ship 'Frederyk Chopin' - celebrating her 200th birthday. Well worth a butchers.

Sadly, she's not at St Kat's Pier as advertised. She's been moored in West India Docks instead - due to 'exceptional depth issues on the Thames' according to the signs. What ... they didn't know it was Springs then?

St Kats have issues with depths on low tides. Vessels can get stuck right outside of the Red bridge on Centre Basin and also near Ivory House.

I am sure that Telford would have installed backpumps if they had been available...

I believe the Basins may have silted up somewhat since Telford's day. I did read somewhere it's only the water pressure and silt that stops areas caving in.

I accept that there may be depth problems in the docks - but Chopin was due to be on the pier - not in the docks. That's why I was being a bit cynical about the tides.

Well they can't use the outside of the Pier as the Steamers need it. The inside depths can drop to less than a fathom on Springs.
