Thames Burgee

Having recently ordered mine. Where is the correct place to fly a Burgee. Is under the National Flag acceptable. Or should it go on the front ?

Flying a burgee on the ensign staff is never acceptable in polite circles of the seagoing fraternity and yotties, which is why I fly mine there, I'm neither polite, seagoing or a yottie.

It is a public service I provide on the river, making old skippers in their Freeman's spit out their pipes in shock and apoplexy, thus helping them reduce the nicotine content in their lungs.

The ensign staff should be kept free of any flag other than the ensign.

If you have another mast (I do not) you can fly it from there, or from a jackstaff at the front of the boat.

I do not have a jackstaff and refuse to fit one as it will make my boat look like a kids toy boat.

Presumably in flying a burgee - you want it to be seen. In which case it can't be seen easily as No: 2 on an ensign staff.

A burgee has at least two functions:-

Identifies your membership or interest.
Perhaps more useful - shows you where the wind is blowing; quite useful if you have a boat that is affected by wind and wind direction.

That's why they are more usually "up front" somewhere....
