Thames boat safety scheme

Hello all,

Moving up to the non-tidal for a while this Summer and thought it worthwhile getting a Boat Safety Certificate in case I extend my stay.

It's a very simple 22ft Searay with no cookers, gas or toilets, just an inboard petrol engine. Hopefully that won't prove too much of an effort to get certified.

My question is does anyone have any recomendations of an examiner who works around the Thames Ditton Marina area?

You can download the scheme requirements and there is also a section giving contact details and locations of examiners.

Umm - isn't it that if you are merely visiting the River through one of its short term licences - these are restricted as to the length of stay then you can "self declare" that the vessel complies..

However, is a BSS needed anyway longer term (not familiar with that boat model).

Presumably this means extend beyond period covered by visitors licence?
If so, it's a boat with an engine - it needs a BSS Certificate for a Thames registration.

I can't stay on a visitors licence for as long as I want so l will need to apply for an annual licence unfortunately, and that requires a Boat Safety Certificate.

Anyway I have found a delightful gentleman called Jolly Roger who will carry out the inspection.

We don't have any authorised examiners called Jolly Roger.

We do have three Rogers down south - Roger Wells, Roger Downer and Roger Alsop.

You need to be confident that your 'examiner' is authorised.

Goodness, I do hope I don't get a certificate for that!!!!!

He is in fact Roger Wells, and his website is headed Jolly Roger so I preferred someone with a sense of humour rather than some po-faced traffic warden type!

I have just used a boat safety examiner called Ben Greene. He was very helpful and efficent and more importantly the price was right which is hard to find on this river. And he left my gold alone!!!
