Testing paint colour for hull

I am reduced to the idea of buying a pot of paint & covering a metre square panel of ply in order to "offer it up" against the hull to test acceptability. Might it be possible to take a photograph & alter the colour? I'd be much obliged for any helpful suggestions because the size of the colour sheets in the sample books [Jotun] does not seem to promise much help.
