Testing my Autohelm 2000 ram

I have an old (c1980's) Autohelm 2000 tiller pilot, the model with a "jampot" control unit and seperate tiller arm.
I am trying to fix it, and need to test operation of the ram. It has four wires (red, yellow, green and blue). Where do I apply 12v? Can anyone suggest a regime for testing it? also....
What do the four wires do? I am pretty sure it is not a stepper motor drive.

Get through to Jayne (she's in charge of Customer Service) and ask to speak to a service engineer.

He'll probably talk you through..

Thanks I will try them in time. This unit was made before most of the service dept people were born though. They hold very few spares, I know this because they told me the last time I had a problem in 1995.
The more information I can gleen before I contact them the better, I thought I may even solve it myself with a bit of help from the esteemed forum.
Has anyone got a circuit diagram?
