There are ways of remembering some of them; Q for quarantine is yellow, W for I require a doctor has white (bandage) with red (blood) in the centre, There are only two 'swallow tails' A ( <u>a</u> diver's down there) and B (for Bang).
S is astern in the blue, U are standing into danger (from white to red) etc etc. It's fun in a warped, sad kind of way, to make up your own ways of remembering.
Yes, when I first did yachtmaster in the seventies we had to know all the one and two flag signals, morse to 6wpm, semaphore, leadline marks and many such arcane low-tech oddities. I can still remember a lot of it.
No idea about navigation by laptop, though.
