Does anyone have one and is it any use for navigating. Any general comments? From the forum entries I've found elsewhere Navionics is constrained and OpenCPN is impossible but have I missed something?

I have tried installing Navionics on our Hudl ( currently works on my Smartphone). Everything loads up but I cant get the gps to work. Navionics currently dont show any support for the Hudl and have not given any indication that they will support it.

when you purchased Navionics was it for a Tablet or a smartphone?

The Hudl is my first tablet so I've nothing to compare it with but I'm very impressed so far. I've loaded MX Mariner and on the one inshore trip so far (only a couple of miles) it agreed with the vessel's Standard Horizon chartplotter.

GPS seems to take a long time to get a fix and loses the signal fairly easily even after recent AGPS data refresh. Much poorer GPS performance than any other phone, tablet, device I come across.
However, it does work and I own a couple of external Bluetooth dongles These both give great GPS performance when linked to the HUDL. Only used it with TomTom so far, so it might be adequate off-shore.
My Bluetooth GPS dongles are brilliant, one even picks up a good signal in centre of a concrete building with a room full of servers overhead. So HUDL GPS seems poor when I'm used to excellent GPS performance.

A friend of mine has a Hudl using it as a chart potter, he's running visitmyharbour charts. You'll need an app called marine navigator too. He's quite happy with it.

MX Mariner looks quite good but I was confused by the statement that the UK charts were "available as in-app purchase" - so how much did the app cost with UK charts (and I'd only want south coast)???

I just downloaded it straight onto my Hudl. I think it went onto the memory card. It was £4 something and has all the Admiralty charts from The Wash round to Padstow plus the channel French coast (although not as detailed). It also includes all the port charts such as Portland Harbour, Yarmouth etc etc. These appear as you zoom in.
I've just checked the coverage again and it seems to go even further north.
Worth trying for under a fiver!

Interesting must try again, I have an old Navionics when it had all charts from channel to the Canaries and it loads on my new smart phone but not on hudl?
Says my device not compatible with this version
I have to say the new phone a waterproof Xperia V is great for navigating.

Sorry, didn't spot this request for a while. The dongles are both quite old (2007/8??) so probably aren't available now. I think that the better one was a "GlobalTop G66 plus" and it is great. Seems to get a first fix very quickly and often continues to work inside buildings. Only downside is that has an automatic power off after several minutes with no Bluetooth connection. Fine with Bluetooth and it also works fine via USB link but shuts down automatically when in "wired" mode. The other dongle isn't as good but doesn't shutdown without warning (i.e. no auto off feature).
My HUDL was quite an early one and suffered from the known touch screen problem. Tesco replaced it within a couple of days. I saw several complaints about poor GPS reception in early HUDLs. Perhaps the problem was fixed after a few months. I'll check around in case it was software related and might be fixed with a patch.

Thanks for that Mistroma. At the moment the GPS on my Hudl seems fine as long as it can see open sky. It would be good if it worked inside the boat.
