Tesco diesel oil bargain

So I shoot off to my local Tesco to buy oil...... Oh what disappointment..... some one beat me to it.... all gone!!!!!

So I swing into Lidl on the way hone to pick up some own brand noodle pots to cheer myself up.... mmmm the beaf and tomato beat any other 43p snack on the planet!!!! Lo and behold... Engine oil..... OK it's £10.99 a pop, but that is for a full 5 Litres. 10 minutes later and we have 20 litres in the boot.... and a few pot noodles too....

Result!!!

Everyone is free to use the oil he prefers. Wikipedia has a nice article about basics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_oil and so do http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/oils.htm

Engine manufacturers state the standards needed by each engine - as a minimum. Despite recommendations of one er the other brand, no manufacturer void warranty due to use of other brands, so as long as requirements are met, any oil is OK. Goes without saying that there are way more oil brands than manufacturers, but some actually use own additive packs.
In reality the oil specs. originally given within a few years will be superseeded by 'next versions' so you have to accept a newer (higher) spec due to availability.

Some manufacturers even state that certain oil standards (like GM Dexos2) allows for extended service intervals whereas 'lesser' oils are ok provided you keep shorter intervals.

If you believe that a certain crude oil, mineral, semi- or fully- synthetic, single/multi grade or a special additive is better, then use it. I'd keep a close eye on things, though.

Personally use an oil beyond the manufacturer recommendation and replace it annually - way, way below the number of engine hours it ultimately copes with.

Anyone else notice that they are selling it in 4ltr cans.
Whatever happened to 5ltr and Gallon cans?
Anything to con us out of a few bob :(
Typical of Tesco of late, one if the reasons they are in the cack! Sneaky soon gets found out!

Boats are not cars. Modern driving may involve hours on end at 80 mph at the height of summer. Yacht auxiliary engines run far cooler, especially raw water cooled ones, possibly for no more than a few minutes at a time. Oil requirements are totally different.

For that reason in my old Petter Mini Twin I use 'Castrol Tection 15W/40', from what I ve read and been told this is suitable for the older style diesel engine which may be used less often with extended services, it is I believe the same as 'Castrol Agri Power Plus' which I used to use for the same reasons, I changed from this oil because I couldn't buy it in quantities smaller than 20L.

In fairness to Tesco, please note that Halfords (for example) also sell oils in 4l containers - online, all 10 of the larger Castrol oils are 4l, and 2 of Halfords' own (a further 14 of which are 5l). Oh - and I find it hard to believe that a group of folk discussing budget oil offers don't check the labels when they're buying! :)

For those who care about putting the correct oil in their boat engine, you can still get API CD oil, but you have to go to France to get it. I just bought this 5L pack in Carrefour only last week, cost no more than 12 euros.

Of course going to France just to get 5L of oil can be a bit extreme, but hunt it down when you are there.
