Apparently, according to a friendly Boarder Agency Stazi, the biggest route for Terrorists of the Muslim variety is now Southern Ireland to Scotland and thence inbound. Seems the MIB will be after ye if ye regularly sail those routes!

I have been boarded twice in the Oban area and often see the cutter in the area.
However, it is apparently, also a popular area for landing other contraband ..

I was told a while back that a huge quantity of drugs come in via Loch Melfort.

Makes sense I suppose...... a quick look at the charts and there are so many nooks and crannies in sparsely populated areas. For this reason alone, you would think that the UKBA would do more to get the boating fraternity "on their side" as eyes and ears.

One volunteer is worth ten pressed men !

Puddock, you are now the official YBW front line against the evil-doers. You are hereby required, authorised and entitled to hoist the blue ensign, and to stop and search as you will any boat or craft which you deem to have an excess of whisky on board, sorry, to have contraband or illegals on board.

I accept that responsibility which you have bestowed upon me. I give my services to Queen and Country to ensure that any vessel I board, which is found to contain an excess of Whisky on board shall not set sail with said excess .......... hic........;)

On a more serious note, I would have no hesitation in reporting something that appeared 'untoward'. I know some people who say they would just turn a blind eye - why?

Strange that they have been so unsuccessful (so far). It would appear the home grown variety outweighs the imports. As for the cutter, I thought it was there to provide amusement for the locals of Oban with its reverse parking manoeuvres at the Northern Light pier.

Has anyone been boarded while actually sailing as opposed to motoring?

"

"Strange that they have been so unsuccessful (so far). It would appear the home grown variety outweighs the imports"

Why do you think that may be? Do you think that if we 'left our doors wide open' that 'homegrown' would be the source of choice?

It amazes me, how little some people see of the world and its ways sometimes. There really is nothing more dangerous than a man, sitting in his own little cocoon of his own little world............. you need to get out more - or shut up !

Puddock, I seem to have unintentionally rattled your cage. Thank you for providing the answer to the boarding while sailing question.

On re-reading my post I agree it reads as if the "unsuccessful they" I was referring to were the Customs. The "they" I actually meant were the terrorists that the OP asserted were using Eire-Scotland as a route. I know what I meant to say ....

If you thought I was referring to Customs and drugs then I am certainly aware of previous failed/foiled import attempts via the west coast and thus, probably, unheralded successful attempts. And, yes, I do wholeheartedly approve of the efforts to disrupt and prevent the import of drugs and have contributed in a small way in the past to these efforts.

I happily accept that the rib crews are competent but perhaps the driver of the cutter was under tuition (and why not?) on the 2 occasions I listened to the extended use of the (noisy) bow thruster + the twin screws.

On the contrary - you have not rattled any cage.
We were boarded whilst sailing toward PD - in fact, we were very close and suggested that we may have to alter course and reduce sail/ motor very soon. Not a problem, do as you would normally do- no sign of antoginism etc. I did feel they performed very efficiently.
When we asked if they'd like us to hove-to, they suggested we carry on as normal.....and evrything went very smoothly.
As I said earlier, maybe others have had different experiences - I cannot possibly be expected to speak for those.
On a personal level - YES, I am happy to be boarded by these people.

A few years ago I was questioned by two gentlemen, down from London, at St Mary's on Scilly. They were looking at the inbound route via Scilly to Penzance.
