hi all again can anyone help with any websites you might know about the wiring to Terminal designtion according to DIN 72 552. as you 'se that have followed i am really trying as a newbie boater to do all jobs i can myself . since my boat sunk, all the help im asking is really making this possible. and i want to thank all those who have really taking me on board with there information and help . as i came from a rough upbringing of childrens homes etc im not used to people being so nice to me. and it has touched me deeply and restored mey faith in humans.
regards to you all.
john
p.s i am going to post on the latest pics of the cleaner boat and the wiring im left with to re wire YIKES.

Got the info i needed thanks cheers john
but still need help identifying the wires to where

Terminal designation according to DIN 72552 compliments of Google

As for what to where - try a car manual (haynes variety) for wiring diagrams /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't worry about the DIN designations.
Cliff has posted the list that again tells you that 54 is for a trailer stop light connection. but you are not wiring a trailer plug its an ignition switch.

You have the wiring diagrams in your VP owners manual. The designations in that are what matter.

The difficulty will be if any of the items do not have the connections marked according to the diagram. then we will have to figure then out somehow or the other. The DIN list may or may not help.

Why Oh why have you now got three threads running on the same subject. It makes it very difficult to refer to the diagrams in one HERE

photos of the wiring in another

So lets get the diagrams here

And the two most relevant photos

Now stick to this thread so we can refer to the diagrams and pictures easily.

The two photos show that you have the 8 different coloured wires that the diagrams show in the wiring harness.

Eventually i guess we'll need to also refer to the out-drive wiring diagram but i have that, as you do, in the manual.

The thing now is how many of the connections on the engine and the instrument panel can you identify. Most should be fairly easy. you know which all the bits are.

You will need to put appropriate connectors on the wires as you identify where they go. Hopefully they are all something you can obtain from Halfords.

Work systematically take one wire at a time look at the diagram to see what it goes to then identify the right connection on the component. as i said in my PM the colour code tallies with the connections A to H in the 8 way harness connector

The ignition switch may be a problem if it is not marked but not an insurmountable one.

i am a bit worried about the condition of switches etc if they have been under water and very dubious about the instruments especially the rev counter. If that works it will be a miracle.

Right then. At the instrument panel end <ul type="square">

[*]The white (ivory) wire goes to terminal 50 of the key switch. (no other connection on there)
[*]The black wire goes to one side of the charge warning light.
[*]The red wire goes to connection 30 of the key switch, another red wire goes from there to the "extra switch"
[*]The green wire goes to connection 15 of the key switch.
[*]The grey wire goes to the rev counter (but not the + or- terminal).
[*]The yellow wire goes to the temperature gauge but again not the + or -
[*]the brown wire goes to one side of the oil pressure light.
[*] the blue wire goes to the negative terminal of the rev counter and another goes from there to the negative or earth terminal of the temperature gauge.
That's the harness wires sorted.

Within the panel itself green wires run from (the infamous) terminal 54 of the key switch to the positive terminals of the rev counter and temperature gauge, one side of the oil pressure warning light, one side of the charge warning light and one side of the illumination switch and then from the other side to the illumination bulbs in the two instruments,

It would probably be sensible to do all these green wires before connecting the harness wiring.

At the engine end:<ul type="square">

[*]the white wire goes to connection 50 on the starter solenoid. That'll be the small connection.
[*]the black wire goes to connection 61 on the alternator together with the (thin red) connection from the regulator
[*]The red wire goes to a fuse and then to connection 30 (the large one) on the starter solenoid, a heavy 35mm red wire the goes from there via the isolator to the battery +ve. Another red goes from the large connection to the D+ terminal of the alternator.
[*]The green wire goes via the series resistor to connection 15 on the coil, another goes from terminal 1 to the distributor.
[*] the grey wire goes to terminal 1 on the coil.
[*] The yellow wire goes to the temperature sensor.
[*]The brown wire goes to the oil pressure sensor
[*]The blue wire goes to D- on the alternator, which is also grounded. A thin black wire from the regulator also goes there.
that leaves a thin green wire from the regulator to DF on the alternator and of course a 35mm black wire from battery -ve to the earth connection on the engine.

I'll read this through again tomorrow in case there are any mistakes.

Later:

Discovered that on some Volvo engines the key switch is marked 75 rather than 54 so if you find 75 on there its the one. (75 is the DIN connection for the radio and cigar lighter!)

I have had another look at that and I don't see any mistakes in what I have said. A check through by anyone else who fancies a go at it will be welcome though.

A couple of things to add.

I think the connection on the temperature gauge that the yellow wire goes to is marked G.

Looking ahead I notice that there is also a feed from terminal 54 of the key switch to the control switch for the out-drive. A 1.5 sq mm red wire this time.

This makes an awful lot of wires to connect to terminal 54 I would think it would be necessary for them all to go to a small bus-bar that is connected to that terminal.

If you want me to carry on and go over the wiring for the out-drive please say so. I have the diagram on the computer.

yip vics thanks again im just about taking that all in im going to give it a go tomorrow or the next day i had noticed i did have all wires accounted for and please do go over the engine i will probably end up doing that as well.
thanks for the time you have put in
regards again john
p.s i will let you know how i go.
