Temperature warning light

Hi, thanks again to all who gave me sound advice regarding my oil gauge problem, replaced oil pump.
My temperature warning light stays on after start up, no audible warning. Any ideas please

Faulty sensor ? ( try disconnecting it)
Sensor wiring shorting to ground ?

Is it supposed to come on when you fist switch on? ............... Unlikely, but Volvo Penta ones do

Is a high temperature warning supposed to also sound an audible alarm?
