Temp warning buzzer

I have a bit of a niggle at the moment with the over heat warning buzzer on my port engine (AD31). When running hard the stbd engine gets to about 200c on the gauge and port to just under but the port engine buzzer starts to buzz very quietly. We have checked the temps with a meter and although the guages give different readings they seem to be running at about the same temp. Basicaly looking at the gauges the port engine is cooler but it is the one with the temp alarm, are these known to be innacurate/unreliable, should I be worried, what temp do your engines run at, at 3500RPM ish??

Simon, Funny you have this problem. One of ours on the AQAD 41A's doing the same only at 180C. I disconnected the alarm one and will order a new sensor, apparently they are not as reliable as we would like.

Exhaust overheats were a regular problem. Current designs seem to have cured thsi. Have a Volvo engineer look and advise.

thanks for the above, we are fairly sure it is not over heating, checked with a digital probe and felt the exhaust elbow etc all of which seem to be as they should be, I suspect it is crappy Volvo gauges or sensors!!

Lemme know how you get on Paul, would be interesting, how is your new toy going, Debs and Arthur are well pleased with theirs

I am having a similarly odd problem on KAD42s.

3 weeks ago the stbd engine went to 205C at 3000rpm, but no alarm buzzer. Port ran at 185C. Checked coolant levels and topped up.

Last weekend, cruised at 3000rpm for an hour, both engines at 185C. Opened up to 3500rpm and within 30 seconds I get an overheat alarm on the port engine this time, though the temp still read 185C port and 190C stbd.

And I could barely hear the buzzer - I need to get them moved or attached to a loudhailer by my ear!!!

Discussed with my "tame" Vilevo engineer - he's coming for a blast at the weekend so he can check the actual temps while running under load.

I'll let you know his view of the accuracy of sensors, guages and alarms. I don't trust them at the moment.

i have had the same problem on an off now for three years
changed sender unit checked wires and all the other overheating related thingies but no change . But i do know that if engine does over heat the buzzer does work loud + correct as i found out when i lost fan belts!
Nice man from volve recons there could be an short somewhere along the line

i have just learnt to ignore it

Well it seems that I am not alone here then. Sorry to hear you are all having similar problems but it is kinda comforting to know. As you say when we munched an impellor last year we herd the alarm on full song, and you are correct you would not miss it! On the way back from Newtown Creek last sinday we decided to ignore it and stay at 3400Rpm with an eye glued on the gauge, it stayed constant with everything looking fairly ok so as you say may have to learn to ignore for now! Whan I say the buzzer is sounding it realy is quiet!

When I have got that fixed I will have to have a look at the wonky port rev counter that will not spring to life till the engine exceeds 2000 rpm for the first time.....then there is the dodgey stb volt meter that has a life of it's own! Then................................. Sheesh the list goes on, but hey what else would I do when the weather is too crap to go out boating :eek:)

Had a similar problem a few years ago. The easist way to check the senders is to make up 2 leads and swop them over at full engine temp. This should at least transfer a sender prob. onto the other set of instruments. Dave.

If its like mine (tamd 74p) then you have bymetal sensor stuffed down exhaust elbow. These are supplied by Halyard, and the complete kit is about £35
They have done an upgrade which requires drilling of the elbow to receive a more reliable (read more expensive also) sensor. I managed to get an old version from Halyard and fitted it but that has now packed in as well.

The buzzer sounds when it goes open circuit so shorting out wires on sender should stop buzzer to prove.

Interested in your post re VP 42's. Have exactly the same (very recent) problem except that the gauge reads about 90 when the buzzer sounds and I can pull more rpm than you before it does so. Hence would be interested in the diagnosis by your Volvo friend following the promised blast last weekend.
