Temp on volvo Tamd72 engine

Hi all.
On our Fairline phantom 41 we noticed the maximum temp on the temp gauge only reached about 60c after a good run ,so mechanic recomended we change the 2 thermostats.When we removed the old thermostats they looked fine but we went ahead and fitted 2 new ones anyway.
No difference -temp gauge still reads the same,ie about 60c.Now these engines should run at about 90c-correct?
Any thoughts ? Is this a problem ?

I am not sure what the correct temp range is for a TAMD72, our 71A engines should be 75 - 95 C, however I would be more concerned about a difference in readings between engines. It is unlikely that both engines would be suffering the same fault - I would be very surprised if both thermostats had failed.

Possibly worth checking power supply to instruments - do you have flybridge repeater instruments, if so do they read the same?

Have you checked the gauges at both stations (flybridge and lower) if these are both reading the same then try swapping the sender with the one on the other engine.

how hot does the engine run at 60 you would it comfortable to touch water cooled parts

I took the boat out yesterday and yes both flybridge and inside helm are giving the same reading - approx 50 - 60c.
Water cooled parts are hot to touch so I would hazard a guess and say the engine is hotter than 50-60c.
Next step is to get the sender looked at - what does this look like ?? and where on the engine would I find it (them)?

We had overheating problems in 2008. (Warning was actually going off) Tried swapping thermostats etc but no difference. In the end we bought an infrared laser thermometer from Maplins for around £15 (just looked - none that cheap now but I am sure you can get one from somewhere else) We were then able to take temperature measurements everywhere which were all normal. This pointed to the sender unit which I replaced (well actually peanuts replaced it because I could not even work out where it was). Very useful tool which may help you analyse the problem. You can point it at the heat exchanger (both ends), thermostat housing, cylinder block, expansion tank, exhaust/turbo etc.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I will order the sender and try to fit it myself,if possible .I'll let you know how I get on !

Its interesting that after changing the thermostats (2) and charging me accordingly ie parts plus labour, the 'expert' did not suggest looking at the sender as a potential source of the problem!!
Sometimes I feel people are happy to take the money without really fixing the problem.
