Telescopic danbuoy question

Simple one really.

Purchased a 3 section telescopic danbuoy which is pushpit. mounted. All tied on to the horseshoe buoy.

Do you sail with it extended? Thus giving 3m swinging around? Or do you extend it before going off shore?

Or do you leave it unextended, and extend it if you ever needed to?

It is going to take a few seconds to extend it but I would always keep it collapsed and so compact. But do ractice extending it and releasing the danbuoy.

+1, that's what I do.

Depending on the danbuoy it is often an idea to have the flag rolled up in a tube suspended from the backstay; that way as soon as the danbuoy is pulled free the flag deploys, rather than having to fiddle with elastic bands etc.

My danbuoy has a light which is activated by pulling off a clip, so that clip is tied to the backstay as well.

I don't want to loose time when I need to deploy it so my is extended all the time.
Only collapse it for stovage in vinter.
it does not swing around it's stable in the bracket.

Always collapsed for storage, have made a cover for the flag which is attached by a thin lanyard so it just pulls off for deployment and practice extending to full length, takes a couple of seconds.

Might be OK with an experienced crew but I doubt if I went over the side SWMBO would be able to (know how to) extend it in the panic, knowing she still has to drop sails and hit the DSC alarm. Seeing the state off some MOB gear on the back of boats, a tangle of elastic and line would grest many would be rescuers.

Practice MOB then, with you "hiding" once you've chucked the fender over

I find it difficult to get into the habit of interrupting eg a holiday, to do, but it throws up all sorts of learning points, which if it was me that was MOB i would like to have been learnt already if you know what i mean

We keep our dan buoy collapsed, but practice putting it up. The flag and light just follow it over board without any extra footering

I compromise: half top section only extended, stopped from dropping down by small clamp on top tube, with sock on lanyard over the rolled up red flag - on mine this gives about a 5 foot pole above water with flag and light even if you don't fully extend the top and extend the middle section. http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/boats/charter/moored3.jpg

I found that stowing it fully extended at about ten feet above water length put so much whip into the thing that it kept damaging it's stowage clamp brackets.

A flag which has been tightly rolled in a tube for many years will often not unroll when deployed. I know the one we inherited on Ariam would not have done. The tube idea is good, but the flag is better concertina-folded rather than rolled.

If I had a rigid dan buoy I would not carry it with the pole collapsed - it takes too long to deploy. I believe the facility is only there to make transport and stowage easier. In fact, though, we have a Jonbuoy mini-raft which includes a seven-foot pole with flag and light, and which launches with a single pull on a handle.

If you test it with a stop watch and bear in mind that at 6knots you are travelling at 3m/s so if it takes 10 seconds to deploy you could be 30m away you need to decide if thats acceptable. I seas where you need a dan that is tall its probably not!

You also need the sequence pre planned an rehersed:

Ideally the Dan would mark the GPS-MOB automatically...?

I agree with both your points.

I have often spent a few moments unrolling the MOB flag on the danbuoy of boats I sail on and repacking them 'concertina' fashion before restoring the flag in the plastic tube.
