Hi folks
My old speedboat boat had cable steering which had a quick release clamp mechanism to connect to my outboard. My new boat however has the teleflex style steering with a shaft poking out across the splashwell. My question is, should I have a suitable clamp assembly to connect the end of the steering shaft to the outboard's bracket or is it just a case of sticking a nut and bolt through them?
Pardon my ignorance but I've not used this teleflex steering system before.
Many thanks and regards
Gareth

Not sure if i'm understanding your question properly, but normally the Teleflex shaft has a flattened end section with a hole in it, and the outboard has a linkage bar, with a 90 deg bend and a threaded section at the end. You stick the threaded section of the linkage bar through the hole in the steering shaft, then secure it with a washer and nut.

Hi there
I don't have the linkage bar you mention. Yes, the steering shaft has a flattened end with a hole in it but my outboard (mariner 40) just has a handle at the front with a hole in the centre of the handle where the cable steering bracket used to connect to.
I have spent this afternoon fettling a few things on the boat and I've also noticed that with the steering wheel centralised the end of the shaft is quite a way over to the left of the splashwell so I think I am going to HAVE to manufacture my own linkage bar to connect the two anyway as I can't see any way of adjusting the boss that the shaft is supported by in the side of the splashwell.
Thanks anyway and if anyone has any suggestions then I'd still love to hear them.
Regards all
Gareth

Go to any outboard shop and ask to look at a drag link for steering

It is an industry standard so all you need to know is which hand or side it is
