Thanks for the boom response so far - give me something to think about. But while that is going on perhaps someone out there has expertise in engine controls. I have a single lever teleflex (labelled Volvo). When going from neutral to astern the system slips into gear and the throttle takes over - smashing. however, when going ahead from neutral the first part of the travel seems to jam, the shoulder of the cable is pulled almost through the collar before the gear is engaged then it operates smothly. If I clamp the cable so it cannot try to slip through the collar it takes a mighty force to change gear to the point of almost bending the mounting plate. Thereafter it is stiff but will work.
Does this make any sense?
I would appreciate some input on this
Thank you

Disconnect the gear change cable from the gearbox shift lever and try the controls again - are they still tight going into / out off ahead? if so then it is a cable problem - perhaps a broken wire in the cable. If it is free try to operate the gearshift lever by hand and feel for any tightness or stiffness. Form your description it sound more like a gearbox problem but one never knows.

From what I understand, any maintenance to these cables such as lubrication only puts off the inevitable replacement.

Small kinks, bits of grit, rust are all killers.

If the bare end really is bare you might try extracting the wire and and rubbing it down with a light smear of silicon oil / grease.

I agree, it does sound like the gearbox. However, once the sloppiness in the cable is overcome then the gear change is like silk. The real problem I have is that the fault is only going to get worse and that finding neutral iwith the teleflex control is a real fiddle. I will disconnext from the gearbox lever and see what the effect is.
