I have one of the above type Safe-T helm units.
It has developed a squeak around the straight ahead position which has become a bit annoying so I want to grease the shaft where it goes into the helm unit gearbox.

I've got as far as removing the steering wheel and exposing the bare input shaft, but there's a circlip on it so I had to leave it for now while I bring some circlip pliers from home next time.

If I remove the circlip, will that enable me to slide out the shaft to lubricate it?
I can't find any maintenance info or cross sectional drawings for the helm units anywhere online.

For info it looks like this one

The plastic tube should come off exposing a spiral thread of the cable. Wind the wheel so the maximum amount of siral is exposed and grease liberally. Wind the wheel the other way to get the grease inside the steering box. Spend a couple of minutes working it in and apply more grease if needed. Sadly they don't seem to apply grease during manufacture.

Don't forget to grease the shaft at the other end.

Thanks, I did that already a few months ago. The squeak isn't from that end it's from the steering input shaft to the helm unit. How do I lubricate that?

Do I have to take off the back cover?
Or will the spiral all ping out and be impossible to reassemble?
