Teamac Marine Gloss - poor finish, advice needed

I have prepared my boat hull ready for a top gloss by rubbing down with wet & dry and then applying two coats of Teamac undercoat by roller and brush. Two days apart and rubbing down between coats. I then applied two coats of Teamac white gloss using the same system on fine dry days. The top gloss coat dried to a finish just like the undercoat, thishas been spread over two weeks. Thinking I had added some thinners...very little and this may have effected the finish, today I painted another coat without any thinning. I have the same problem.
I returned the almost empty tin to the marine supplier and he agreed it did not look like normal gloss.
I have been in touch with the manufacturers Teamac and talked to their technical team, who were not very forthcoming in information.
Having spent nearly five days painting my boat, I still need another two coats of gloss to finish off.
Has anyone else had similar trouble with getting a gloss finish using Teamac...?
Any suggestions of what paint could now be used to finish the job properly using white gloss..?
I can only say I am very disappointed with the product and technical support.
The supplier refunded my money without a problem, and were very sympathetic to the issues I have been having. In the meantime Teamac will be getting back to me next week..I think they may have wrongly labelled the tins..?
Any advice appreciated..!

I like Epifanes Nautiforte. its not cheap but it does look good. Last year we had loads of time and a guy helpng who really wanted to impress - and the finish was stunning. This year I had to do work in a rush to meet the launch date. Close up not as perfect but from about 1 metre she looks fantastic.

We had to do two last min repairs and even they covered well and blended in OK.

I should say Paean is wooden, you don't say what you are painting.

You mention wet and dry for the rub downs, personally, I tend to use fine cut and used 400 grit for undercoat to 1st coat and 600 grit between the topcoats.

Hi I always painted my Folkboat with Temac Maroon gloss and it came up with a wonderfull gloss. I always added Owatrol to it to keep a wet edge and a good gloss without laying it off.

I had a problem several years ago with Teamac antifoul......red antifoul was coloured blue. I told them what the batch number was and what the paint was supposed to be. They came back to let me know that the paint was not even antifoul and had (obviously!) be labelling incorrectly. We came to an amicable arrangement and, though it was inconvenient, everything was sorted out.

Mistakes happen, but I can't fault them for how they handled it. In fact, I was impressed with them.

I use Epifanes Enamel having got fed up with the intolerance for application conditions of some of the more 'popular' brands. This is a different product to the Nautiforte mentioned above and actually a little cheaper than the equivalent Hempels product. Gloss is good and durability is good.

Many thanks for the replies. The boat is GRP and following contact with the technical department of Teamac I find their advice is about as fit for purpose as their marine gloss paint...!
The retail supplier agrees that the paint does not have a gloss appearance having compared the tin I returned to other Teamac gloss that they have in stock. The manufacturers inform me that there is not a problem with the batch of paint, I can only comment on my personal use of Teamac and while it may be suitable for commercial vessels I remain to be convinced of using this product on GRP boats. I also think that the response from their technical department is poor both in terms of technical advice and in dealing with a personal complaint. The retailer was most supportive, however Teamac give the impression that they are not really interested in dealing with this technical issue or supporting small boat owners.
I have never had a problem with International paints, and I just wonder how this company would support a similar request for technical support. I will now select a gloss paint 'that does what it says on the tin' .
Any suggestions welcome..?

I had exactly the same problem when painting my boat several years ago.

I used Teamac paints and I will say that the primer and especially the undercoat were supereb, but the gloss was just short of Carp and I returned it for a refund.

If you have the preparation work done I would try International 10 year door paint, I used Dulux wethershield for years but it takes quite a while to harden off. Inter Door paint has a high gloss hardens quickly and is half the price of marine equivalents.

Try it

At a rough guess the problem you have described is normally caused by humidity or temperature changes. I have seen timber craft that had a mat finish in way of internal lockers or ribs leaving an external piebald effect, whereas GRP boats tended to have an overall matt finish so maybe the fault lies with application conditions rather than the manufacture.
I too have been disappointed with Teamac gloss as it did lose its gloss after only one year, My International dark green gloss applied in 2002 has only just been recoated but you pays your money-------

I bought a tin of Teamac Boot top recently and after noticing that the tin had two labels and reading these posts on this forum I peeled off the top label to reveal the one underneath. The second label said marine gloss, I got in touch with Teamac and they replaced the paint with the right paint. However if I had used the marine gloss instead of the boot top I would not have been at all happy. All I can say is make sure they have put the right labels on!
