teal 22

can anyone help I have a teal 22 which was converted to an outboard 75hp. would this have anything to do with the boat been very unstable on the water when travelling at 12 knots or more. I have put trim tabs and doel fins on it to no avail. its used for offshore fishing

Welcome

You say "converted". Was it from stern drive or shaft drive inboard?

You have a lot of power for the hull and I doubt it was rated for 75hp when it was new. Instability can be caused by lousy hull form or poor weight distribution or a combination of the two. You may be able to reduce it by trimming the boat with moving weight forward and using the trim on the motor as well as the tabs.

The Teal 22 is a very stable hull.
Outboards are the most normal cofiguration.
Up to 90hp.
I am fettling one at the mo.
She has a DT85 Suzuki on the blunt bit.
Goes very well without tabs or fins, just sorting the eng out for the owner.

The Teal I know is a hard chine hulled cruiser with spray-rails moulded in, making it look like a semi-simulated clinker and yes, a stable platform for rushing around. I asked for the pics to make sure we are all singing from the same Teal 22 hymn sheet because being "unstable" is not a trait I'd associate with h/c Teal hull either, especially at 22ft long. However, if the OP has got his model wrong or we have misunderstood and it is actually a semi-dis or r/bilge jobbie then it would be very unstable indeed!

Ahh!
Most Teals I know are planing hulls.
Simulate clinker but with flat areas aft as it were.
Deffo planing though.

60's and 70' hull design
Into the 80's fer a bit.

Fine entry forward, flatter aft
Well you know.
Could be another 'Teal Type Hull'
Nowt to do with dashing about.

But as a mobo, I only know about dashing about kinda hulls /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The first one I came to in a search has a 115hp inboard. Others have up to 90 hp outboards. I don't think there's any reason to suppose that it is not rated for a hefty motor.

You're right Phil, the planing sports cruiser Teal 22 can take a lot of outboard power, or inboard with stern drive, and it was a useful 4 berth off-shore or inland cruiser, and also quite stylish albeit with the sim clinker spray rails a little unusual. It was built in either aft or centre cockpit versions both with wheelhouse, although early grp wheelhouses did nothing to enhance the looks later ones with aluminium frames did. Out of interest I too googled it, interestingly, its currently valued around £3750 which would make it a bargain boat.

thanks for your reply hav n't got picture at the moment but if you google Teal 22 the first boat that you see is the same type boat as mine. Its blue and white with centre wheelhouse. mine has the rails moulded on the hull. there is a good keel on the hull but flattens out coming to the stern. I have been told where the keel board stops approx 3' from the stern that i need to extend the keel board to the end of the stern to give more grip in the water. what is your views on that. it was an inboard with stern drive, transum was cut down for outboard engine to be fitted.
