I plan to make new engine hatches this winter, they will be a ply base covered in teak to replicate a teak deck.

I have some teak, about half of what I need.

What is available? I remember reading somewhere in the last few months that there was some farmed teak to become available?

How different would Iroko look?

Anyone reccoment a good source of reclaimed teak? Or anyone got some bits I can scrounge?

Good news is that the longest length will be about 4 foot. I guess its about 2 inches wide and about 1/4 inch thick.

Looking forward to this as I have been wanting to do it for 6 years!

Might be worth contacting Timbmet. As you probably know, they are the biggest importer of teak in the UK. They recently sold off their old main site in Oxford so they might have some odds and ends lying around.

Would not mix teak with iroko as it would not match. All iroko provided it is straight grained would be OK. Howells in Poole do teak already machined to that size.

However, as the teak is not structural and provided it is not in an area of heavy use such as the sole of a wheelhouse, I would be tempted to clad the ply in 2.6mm teak veneers from Robbins. Looks great, half the price of 6mm decking and you can save your teak for a job that requires its properties. If you do go down this route you can bed it on epoxy and fill the gaps with Sikaflex, or if it is not exposed to extremes of temperature or humidity with pigmentd epoxy. I did my cockpit locker lids this way nearly 20 years ago and they still look great.

I can vouch for that as well, mr B of tommy, did his entire aft deck of his riva with that method, looks great.

Hi Ben

Have now looked at your Bio and seen what a lovely boat you have. I am sure the teak veneer strips would be my choice. As well as the wooden classic I also have a modern Bavaria in the Med. The cockpit seats and sole are covered in teak veneers, perhaps a little thicker at about 3mm. I think they are glued on with Sikaflex and vacuum bagged - essential as they are not flat. They are now in their 8th season and heavily used by cherterers with no noticeable wear. This year I have done the swim platforms on the sugar scoop with Robbins veneers epoxied to the GRP. Look good.

How are Mr and Mrs B? Not seen Pauline o nhere for a while.

I saw an article about a chap in Classicboat, figured it had to be your brother.

I reckon I'll got for the teak strip and then keep the planks I have got for something else.

I want to keep the job light, cant go adding weight tut tut tut.

Mr B and Mrs P are both well, JB is beavering away in my 4cabin, fitting some wood paneling!
Yes that is my Big Bruv, did you see the piccie of Englander in Soller, Mallorca? He is quite a character my bruv, been around a bit, in UK now, just come through French canals and heading for west of Scotland. Teak strip is a great method, especially for a racing lightweight like your boat!!
Englander is looking great at the moment, with heaps of work done and more to do, but internal now, making her more beautiful.

Lindon Lewis Marine in Shepperton had just those sections in stock a few weeks ago . I'm not sure if it was left over from a job or they are starting to stock it , might be worth a phone call .
