Teak grating

I’ve got this teak grating that is in reasonable condition and grab rails too. They look like they need some love but I don’t want to ruin them. Quite like some colour from them. What do the experts think ?

Why do you think they need some love? Look fine to me just plain slightly weathered teak

A quick sand will bring the teak colour back to life. Over time the teak will return to this silvery effect. Any preservative, like varnish, will take a lot of wear and unlikely to keep the teak colour and may cause more problems in the future. Just keep clean and use Patio Magic a couple of times a year to stop any mould growth.

just soak them with teak oil until they won't take anymore then leave to dry.

I personally wouldn't oil them. Just attracts dirt. Boracol or Patio Magic or similar and leave them grey. If you really, really really want them golden sand carefuly and then use Semco, but for complex things like gratings it's a losing battle.

Teak oil marks everything especially walk off surfaces and cotton, it also attracts dirt like a magnet.
My teak deck, rope boxes and teak garden furniture at home is all treated with Boracol which soaks in.
No staining, it is a biocide kills mould and algae, stops dirt build up.
Treat it leave a month, lightly wash it when dry apply a second coat, thereafter another coat each spring and autumn.
It stays silver and clean, no smell no problem with clothing and it stays clean.

Grey looks good (although I appreciate that's a matter of opinion) and is somwhere between low maintenance and ultra low maintenance. Just Boracol or Patio Magic around twice a year.

I have a personal dislike of grey / silvered teak ...

If they were mine .. it would be a light sanding to remove the weathered silvered layer and then Decking Stain as used on patios and balcony's .... its water based .. it soaks in and really brings out the beauty of the teak and grain ... unlike varnish and other surface based coatings - it doesn't end up with patches where you 'walk' ... easy to add another coat later ...
Its UV and weather resistant ...

I use Oxalic acid, then rinse, dry and then Teak Wonder. It brings back the colour but doesn't have a skin like varnish etc.

Not if you use decking stain ... its easy as just wipe it on when you feel it needs a tart up ...

Inside or out - in fact I would advise against varnish inside .. only needs bit of water and OUCH - a over t ...

Yes I think the general consensus is right. Ill get some boracol and leave it at that. No point making any more work. Just wondered if I was neglecting the Grating. given its 50 odd years old and been left exposed, its lasted so well.
