When I was an apprentice we were allways warned against breathing Teak dust. We were told it was a carcogenic (spelling?). Never seen any proof but not willing to take the risk. Regards, Mike
Many wood dusta are toxic to varying degrees, Iroko is one of the worst, and Teak, also Western red cedar a softwood.
the HSE do a Cosh sheet with toxic woods & their effects, sobering reading, best wear a good respirator!
Avoid teak dust. Like the plague! You wioll get sensitised to it and not be abole to get near teak, without coming out in a rash or worse.
Teak is very resistant to rot, due mainly to the fact that the tree puts all its waste (poison) into the centre of the tree, these poisons stop the critters, spores and bacteria etc which cause rot. This is why the dust is also (in concentration) not good for our health.
Not instead of, but in addition to a good respirator, I would recommend a vacuum cleaner to be attached the the outlet of your chosen sander. It has the secondary benefit of keeping the sanding sheet cleaner of dust which would otherwise clog it.
