I look after my fathers Broom 38 which has a teak deck in the cockpit.

Question is, oil the teak or leave bare?

I have just cleaned the teak with the starbright stuff and the teak is like new.

what do you all do??

leave it unoiled, it's much nicer on bare feet. But goes filthy. Um now not sure, don't really understand teak deck if they are always using shoes cos it's cold. If it is normally covered (under bimini say) then it will be expected to be bare. There is some protective stuff to preserve the appearance called um um oh it's the sealant from Onward Trading. Semco i think that;s it.

Re: oil on teak decks

I oilde the outdoors bit, not the indoors, but haven't redone it. Didn't want to say don't do it cos it is ok for outdoors. But then, not sure if a great idea if veneer ply, but then is brrom real wood or veneer etc etc. My very strong advice as always: dither.

Yeah, I've just been starbrighty cleaning mine and teak oilying the outside bits to make it look as if it belongs to the same boat as the nice goldeny browny inside bits and I think to myself, oi, why are the two F T40s leaving theirs all clean but go greyish without the oily stuff.

Someone told me just scrub with salt water (not fresh).

Praps I'd better look at the PBO thread.

Might save myself lots of ££s and elbow grease....

Good question!

I do read elsewwhere, but this comes from a mate who has lovely silvery grey teak decks. Also forgot to say wipe across the grain, not with it.

BTW you'll have to get into the disorderly queue for my lobsters!!

I have used Starbrite Teak Sealer on my decks and they look like new. Oil is bad news, with the sealer they keep that nice colour and just need washing when you do the rest of the boat, rather than scrubbing. I have found that with previous boats that however careful you are you eventually "remove" some of the teak.
